Twist this map a 180 degree turn and look what I see. Oh my, on the North is Yulee and the Airport, East is Regency and the Beaches, SE is the Avenues - St. Augustine, and, SW becomes Orange Park - Green Cove Springs... Looking at what we bought, just before the economy crashed us into the dust bin of history.

Did any of you know that Baghdad Spelled BACKWARD is JACKSONVILLE?

While I would love to see a Jacksonville subway (or even better mass transit at all), there are a few key differences:

Baghdad population:  6.5 million
Jacksonville population:  1.3 million

I bet they have much higher population densities in Baghdad too.

If it is U.S. dollars being spent I would rather they be spent on the lower density population at home.

No one has ever suggested a Jacksonville Subway. That would be an excercise in insanity. The point is, US Dollars building a Subway in Iraq when we could be building:

1. Commuter Rail for a fraction of this price in JACKSONVILLE!

2. Light Rail to compliment our "Commuter Rail" for a fraction of this price in JACKSONVILLE!

3. Streetcars to compliment our "Light Rail" for a fraction of this price in JACKSONVILLE!

Instead the "Wizard of Washington" has decided to spend it on the worlds longest bomb shelter in Iraq. Trusst me, for the money they are spending in Iraq, we could do a system twice this long (and just as wide) - using a less expensive mode, in 4 American Cities... You get to pick which ones...

Where does it say we are paying for this?  I was talking about the feasibility of such mass transit, not who pays.

Feasibility of a Subway, El or Heavy Rail system in Jacksonville is about zero to none. That is an animal that needs either an incredible density or some special situation (such as a City 100 miles long and 3 miles wide in South Florida) to even be considered. We do have fine density and distribution corridors for standard Commuter Rail, Light Rail or Streetcar.

The article claims the project is funded by Iraq with Iraqi "oil money". Sorry but even as a hawk on the subject of the war - I just don't buy that. Doesn't take rocket science to figure out if we are spending 6 BN a month in Iraq +/- then they can certainly afford to buy themselves a subway. It's rather like saying if you'll cover my house payment then I'm going to buy a new car, with my "own" money. Hogwash.
