There are some decent holes in the wall around town which just happen not to be chains.  I've found the most success by walking around neighborhoods and nearly walking by a mom-and-pop joint.  If only more people got out of their cars and walked neighborhoods we just may become less homogen(e)ous.

Haha.  I said "homo".

I agree, and I hoof it to a lot of the locally owned places throughout Riverside with good food.  Latitude Cafe is getting it's kinks worked out and Cosy Tea is about to open across the street right next door to Ragland's.  Mossfire and it's soon to be open sibling, O'brother's Irish Pub.  Hovan, The Derby House, Gina's Deli and Richard's Sandwich Shop.  Cool Moose and Primi Piatti up a couple doors from it.  The ubiquitous E-Street.  13 Gypsies.  I've been told that all of the sushi restaurants are locally owned, albeit mostly by the same people.

Only 25% of the time. I think the other 75% is a mixture of BBQ, pizza and chinese take out.

Wow. That is great. I am surprised that hasn't made it's way up to Duval yet.

They have their "soft" opening today.  I just grabbed a house recipe chicken curry pastry which is quite tasty as I type.  They also have somosas (chicken, lamb, veggie) as well as lots of teas and truffles.  Finally an Asian area influenced place on a different path :)

We stopped in for a small snack after shopping. We were the only customers during our entire visit and sat at a clean booth. They only served a hamburger, appetizers and wings during the time we were there. I'm not sure if this is typical for evenings, or just at certain times. The service was good and the food was also tasty, however the "jumbo" wings were definitely not. However, the low rating clearly comes from something that really got my goat...a charge of $.99 each for water that appeared on our bill at the end of the meal. This is truly highway robbery at its best. We paid, left a good gratuity, and now I feel okay complaining about being taken advantage of. I did not complain about the water charge, but I'm sure they know this is not the norm. I have never been charged for tap water anywhere...let alone in Jacksonville and at a sit down restaurant. We will never return because of this dishonest behavior and I thought you should know too!

If you were that upset about them hitting you with a 99 cent charge on the bill you should have said something to waiter and dealt with it head up.  Instead you decided to say nothing, and then whine about it on a message board???
