I love Maxwell House and selfishly hope that they stay. They employ hundreds at higher wages, have been there for a century plus and the coffee scent is a part of Jax's cultural identity. It would be cool to explore better integrating historic industry into the future things that people dream about for this old maritime district and former working waterfront. There's no money to build a new jail and new massive convention center. We'll all be dead before that happens. But I'm looking forward to seeing how UF's desire for a downtown campus will impact this topic if the LaVilla site is selected. Still Hyatt or bust for me on the convention center topic.

I think Ford on Bay would be a great location for it as it'd have the greatest impact on DT as a whole especially if it could complement an expanded exhibition hall at The Hyatt. This would help cement The Elbow as a true entertainment/nightlife destination for the city

I see in this rendering coverage of some sort over the entire field.  How much sun block will that provide?  Is it retractable?  Up until seeing this, I thought only the edging over the upper deck would be covered.

It's not a true cover. It will block the rain and lower the heat. But it's transparent. It will still be sunny. And the stadium isn't climate controlled so it's still going to be humid as hell.

It's fixed.  It has IR rejection properties so it passes visible light but should be much cooler underneath than direct sunlight. I don't know what spec of the material they are using, they have different versions that allow different levels of visible light and IR through which is obviously a tradeoff that they had to consider in design.  That rendering also looks like they may be using different spec on different areas of the roof.  The sides look like they may be a heavier shade than directly over the field.

How the New Jaguars Stadium Will Stay Cool in Florida's Heat:

The new "Stadium of the Future" will use a combination of shading, advanced materials, and ventilation to keep fans comfortable even in July's 95°F+ Florida heat.

1. Massive translucent canopy

The centerpiece is a full‑coverage translucent canopy over the entire seating bowl. Made from a special ETFE membrane, it will block harmful UV rays while letting in diffused light, cutting seat‑area temperatures by up to 15°F (e.g., from 95°F to ~80°F) according to engineering tests. The canopy also reduces solar heat gain by about 70%, preventing the "greenhouse" effect.

2. Heat‑resistant seating

All old seats will be replaced with UV‑stabilized polymer chairs that reflect heat and stay at least 20°F cooler than traditional plastic seats. These seats have breathable padding to wick away sweat, and some premium seats will have built‑in micro‑fans and adjustable climate controls.

3. Ventilation and air‑conditioning systems

While the stadium remains open‑air, advanced ventilation and air‑conditioning systems will be integrated to manage heat and humidity. These will work in tandem with the canopy to remove hot air and circulate cooler air, improving comfort without sealing the bowl.

4. Expanded concourses and shade zones

The new design includes four times wider concourses and shaded walkways, giving fans more space to move and access cool areas. Lookout decks and other open spaces will also be shaded.

5. Testing and validation

University of North Florida researchers tested similar ETFE glass/roof materials and confirmed significant heat reduction under such covers, supporting the Jaguars' claims.

Bottom line:

Fans will benefit from shade, cooler seating, active ventilation, and improved airflow, making the stadium far more comfortable in Florida's summer heat than the current open‑air design. The canopy alone can drop seat temperatures by 15°F, and combined with seat upgrades and ventilation, it will create a much more pleasant game‑day experience.

The opening up of the corners has helped a lot with airflow this preseason. We'll see how it feels at 1PM in 10 days.....

When I worked there, once they replaced the videoboards, that caused a massive shift in airflow throughout the stadium. This study wasn't done because obviously you don't think about that being open air but air blowing in from the river helped keep circulation throughout the stadium, although hot at least it was a breeze. The videoboards essentially built a wall from that coming in freely.

Demolishing the corner sections of the lower bowl is helping return the air flow, that is my understanding. Adding a roof and other components will help keep it 10-15 degrees cooler.
