On a 14-4 vote, Jacksonville City Council overrode Mayor Donna Deegan's first veto but it might not be the final word on legislation giving a 29% payment increase to Meridian Waste for collecting residential garbage.

Deegan had supported a 5% increase and called council's higher payment a "cash for trash" bill. She said it would cost $4 million a year more than what's necessary for the city to ensure Meridian fulfills its contract with the city for garbage pickup.

only tangentially related, but it would be great if landscaping & maintenance would pick up trash around the city too, really sucks to see overgrown city-owned lots littered with grab age all over town.

I had to go sweep broken glass and food garbage off the sidewalk on Craven Rd last week after stepping over it for several days

more on-topic, it looks like they're adjusting the rate to be more in line with what Waste Pro gets. I'm curious why Mayor Deegan takes umbrage with the rate increase for one company being made to almost match another?

the backwater corrupt politics of this city are at the very least entertaining to watch while we see our taxpayer funded services fail to provide what they should time and time again. Trash-strewn streets in poor condition with vacant lots and abandoned buildings scattered throughout our downtown, and rising rents pushing quality businesses out of long-held locations, but we have some EV AV clown cars coming downtown and an NFL team with the worst record of the last dozen years that we JUST GOTTA spend our money on.

Agree with this 100%. You know it's "trash pickup" day in your part of town when you see more trash on the ground than grass. Southside/Baymeadows looks borderline 3rd world at times
