Australia has some of the world's most f'ed up creatures.  They also have some of the most venomous insects and reptiles in the world.

That said, beautiful country and the people couldn't be nicer.   Won't stop me from going back to Cairns though.  That is a fun little town.

Jason

Holy cow!!  You wouldn't want to walk into that sucker in the middle of the night.

I've read that spider web has a tensile strenght greater than steel.  Pound for pound I'd say its some of the strongest stuff on the planet.

Here are a couple links...  5 times the strength of steel!

What makes this especially disturbing that unlike the tarantula posted above (though, they don't really eat birds unless it's wounded on the ground, they usually eat frogs, snakes and mice), these orb weavers aren't the type of spiders you'd associate with going after such large prey, they're cousins of the big orb weavers we have here (my family's always called them banana spiders), and even at a much smaller size their webs are amazingly strong.

Jason

Yeah, I know the strength of the Banana Spider webs all to well....They're great fun to walk into when your cutting grass.
