QuoteThe council unanimously recommended seven programs to be voted on that would cost the city an estimated $1.5 million. One of the programs will focus on health care.

"Another proposed project is putting $200,000 toward cleaning up and building up neighborhoods, specifically in the Brentwood area.

The other programs include:

  • Teen court program
  • Safety and crime reduction commission
  • Teen tennis program for young people at risk
  • Roof and restoration of Old Stanton High School
  • A mental health services and diversionary program for people convicted of misdemeanors

As a graduate of SCPS (and having spent six years there), I have always felt a certain affinity for Old Stanton. It's an historic building, if I'm not mistaken, and needs to serve a function. I don't exactly know what that is - I think it would make a great museum - but it needs to be more than what it currently is. I am looking forward to hearing more and finding out what plans (if any) are being considered. I hope it doesn't get turned into apartments or something. I doubt it's a big enough building for the school board to relocate its offices to. But something useful would be nice.

^^ I agree.

What if anything is going on with the Annie Lytle school building?

I wonder if this is the proposed plan for Old Stanton:

QuotePlans for the second floor include:
Reception, Auditorium/Event Space, Gift Shop,
Museum/Gallery and a Cafe/Kiosk

Plans for the third floor include:
Auditorium VIP area, offices, classrooms, and
conference/meeting rooms

I found that video hard to watch on my computer - not sure if it's me or the site. In any event, there's not too much info, is there? It's nice to see there appears to be a plan.

I only made it through the first minute or so, just enough to see a small cafe to the right of the front door. The video is pretty slow. A conceptual plan and a few renderings would likely be more effective. Just reached out for more information.

Thanks for doing that. I will be interested to hear what they come back with.

I don't know what they're doing but $1.5M (if they even get that much, looks to me like they just get a piece) isn't going to go too far in that place.

I would say it would make a cool residential conversion but that would be a tough sell with it surrounded by homeless services.

That entire area would be great for the affordable housing type projects that Vestcor has been doing in LaVilla and Brooklyn. With some visioning that also ties back into the significant history of Ashley and Broad Streets, I think revitalization can happen even with the social services in the surrounding area.
