Amazon wants massive Florida air cargo hub

Have always wondered about Cecil's potential as an air cargo hub.

Amazon could soon bring 800 to 1,000 jobs to Polk County.

The company has plans to open a cargo handling facility at Lakeland Linder International Airport. On Monday, city commissioners will vote whether to approve the project.

If the city clears it, construction is scheduled to begin on July 3 and be completed about a year later. The city of Lakeland says the cargo hub will be Amazon's largest facility in the southeast United States.

Doubt it.  Lakeland is right in the middle of Orlando and Tampa and already has a huge Amazon presence.

I'm not sure the'll lose money

The airport will receive $80,651 a month in rent payments on the original 47 acres. Amazon will also pay landing fees of 85 cents per 1,000 pounds of cargo and fuel pump fees with a 3-cent surcharge on each gallon of fuel, McCausland said.

If Amazon expands onto the adjoining 62 acres, the airport will need to make an additional $25 million in improvements and the rent will be adjusted, McCausland said.

The Price/SqFt works out to be $3.51 on the buildings. It would take a while to calculate out the landing fees and fuel surcharge to see how much that nets.

This is good for Lakeland. Given that I'm down there once a month for work I'm happy for them.

I'm not sure but it's a safe bet that those people spend their income on something taxable.

Gotta love the economics of globalism - giving Amazon credit for someone elses tax payment.  Let me ask, when you buy something do you consider your employer to be the one paying the sales tax?

I do take into account that the money I spend - on goods, services and taxes - was earned doing work for my employer. If, at any point, my employer transfers me to their office in Philadelphia or San Francisco then I think you could attribute any taxes I pay in those municipalities to the decision of my employer to move my position there.
