Rehabilitating Suburbia: Maitland



It's one thing to talk about turning a suburban area into a walkable district. It's another thing to see the transformation actually happening. Here's a look at what's currently taking place along US 17/92, in the northern Orange County suburbs of Orlando.

That's amazing.

This is what about $40 million (not even fully spent yet, that's just from the master plan) of investment will do to an urban core. And that's for an area this small.

What I wonder is if you could do a single plan like this for an area as large as our downtown (compared to Maitland). Would it be better to instead develop plans for certain areas (Northbank, Southbank, Shipyards, Brooklyn, LaVilla, Central City)? Or do we just need to develop a singular plan and stick to it?
So, to the young people fighting in this movement for change, here is my charge: march in the streets, protest, run for school committee or city council or the state legislature. And win. - Ed Markey
