The Donald has noted previously that his beliefs are a private, personal thing, but evangelicals seem to know more.

Donald Trump Has Accepted Christ

Donald Trump, according to a new report, has accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

No, you didn't accidentally click on The Onion. That's a factual statement, according to a well-respected evangelical faith leader.

Dr. James Dobson, who was among the more than 900 evangelical faith leaders who met with the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting in New York City, says it happened fairly recently. He also said he knew who led the businessman to Christ.

"I don't know when it was, but it has not been long," Dobson told Godfactor's Michael Anthony in an exclusive interview. "I believe he really made a commitment, but he's a baby Christian. We all need to be praying for him, especially if there's a possibility of him being our next chief executive officer."

"I think that he's open," he added. "He doesn't know our language, he really doesn't, and he refers a lot to religion and not much to faith and belief."

To that, Anthony responded, "I imagine Saul, when he became Paul, didn't know the language, either."

"Yeah, well you've got to cut him some slack. He didn't grow up like we did," Dobson responded. "I think there's hope for him, and I think there's hope for us. I have great concerns about the next election."

Dobson said he was in the "small group" of 40 faith leaders who met with Trump earlier in the day at Trump Tower, and that he had a chance to interact directly with the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting.

"He's a lot nicer guy than you [think]," he said. "I think he is listening. There were a lot of people ministering to him personally."

Dobson also praised the event, during which he said faith leaders were "genuinely seeking the Lord's direction" in the things Trump was saying.

"He's sometimes kind of obscure in the way that he answers questions, and we wanted to ask him directly, with follow-up questions," he said. "We got a chance to do that."

Well the timing is certainly convient. I guess he expects everyone to accept his saying so the way he accepted Obama's profession of faith. I am sure there is nothing hypocritical with the 900 evangelical leaders as well.

I don't understand the need of "evangelicals" to have their candidate of choice appear to have faith or be faithful to justify a vote. If you want to vote for Trump because you think he is the best candidate then vote for him. Conversely, I don't understand why the Republican party always panders to these people because they are clearly as a whole not going to vote for Clinton or Sanders.

This just emphasizes how full of shit Dobson and his ilk are.

"He's a baby Christian."

This is why the Republicans are losing Presidential campaigns (and credibility). . What an unbelievable crock of merde.

Good luck with that, Repubs. I mean if a Mormon isn't capable of winning, who is?

Of course there's always this:

Its really simple, evangelicals want a leader who makes moral and ethical decisions based on certain principles.  Many (not all) contend that certain values have been lost in US leadership.

Its not a belief held by all evangelicals,  (as some believe that ones faith is a personal issue) and that one can make good public decisions without forcing a bible in front of people.

By definition you can't be evangelical and believe faith is a personal issue. You literally have evangelize to be evangelical.

That is correct, but evangrlism cant take on different forms. Some believe that you evangelize by meeting peoples needs through shelters for the homeless and food kitchens. Some believe you can evagelize through public service like running for public office.

Yet others think it should be done through TV and radio.

There is debate about the idea of evangelism using the tools of "caesar" or secular government to promote certain truths which are both common and biblical as,well.

Identifying a social response that should be done strictly on religious terms can deztroy its value to others who dont hold the same type if belief. This is where evangelicals ( and other religious politicians) get in trouble.
