JACKSONVILLE - The City of Jacksonville is preparing to write off millions of dollars worth of city property found to be missing or stolen over the past several years.

News4Jax investigators analyzed a list of hundreds of missing or stolen city equipment from June of 2014 to July 1, 2015 that includes courthouse video systems, ice machines, breathalyzers, and even bullet proof shields used by the JSO's SWAT team. The purchase prices of the items on the list totaled $1.2 million.

An expanded list, dating back to July 2010 includes more than 1,300 items, with original purchase price totaling more than $4.3 million.

If the city can lose a million dollars worth of property, they have too much money.

Sounds like our cops are supplementing their income.  They're really have a good PR week.

^That's a good point, though the administration is hammering Alvin Brown on this, the fact is that a lot of the missing items are from the police and the courts as well. It's a broader problem.

Of course some of this will turn out to just be misplaced, and some of it will have been broken and disposed of and someone just didn't tick the right box. I notice that the Fire Department is missing two resuscitators bought in 1979. But that's a lot of money to lose in less than 5 years.

Sorry, I left off the sarcasm smiley.

Typically when things like this grow legs, you check eBay or Craigs List. Since SWAT shields have a limited market, it would not be surprising that a reseller in CA would have them in stock.

Either way, I was just joking to make a point.

True, and in many cases you can double that number because the 'missing' item in many cases has been replaced.

I haven't read the report, but has anyone done any research into the aspect, "How much has been repurchased v/s how much was initially missing?"
