Awesome article! It saddens me that I haven't been to several of these.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Fun, well-research article!

Really enjoyed this one.

Lunch will come early today :D

Why WHY did I read that 2 hours before lunch!?!?! I'm never going to make it that long now :D

I had no idea Woody's was a Jax restaurant. I think they're the most popular, they've spread fairly well in to Central Fl.

Between Woody's and Bono's that have become chains with many locations; Bono's is vastly better...

I've been to all of them except Rib Shack....even though it's less than 10 minutes away from my house. They're now on my short list to check out in the near future.

I haven't been to woodys in a while because I like bonos so much, but I'm going to revisit them.
Ben, why do you say they went down hill?

I thought you said oldest barbecues,  anything founded since the 70s is not old.  But I definitely have to check out copies now anyone who's been around that long has got to have something going for them.

^We capped the list off at around 30 years of operation. It narrowed our options pretty quick.

Try Rib Shack early on Friday for lunch. They have a great beef brisket on Fridays. Their hot sauce is good too. Save room for some Banana pudding. And ask for Shannon as your server. Great place.

Jax's Longest Operating BBQ Joints

Loved this.  I ate at the Pig on Lem Turner when growing up way back then.  Used to have pictures of Jerry Lewis inside and I think story was he often visited relatives in the neighborhood? anyone remember that?  Fred Cotton on Main st was a favorite.  Too Bad Checkers is gone but the place there on St Aug Rd called "southern Charm" is fantastic.  Try it.

I remember Woody.  He was just starting a new BBQ business 50 years ago and we were in the same class of Dale Carningie and I was an employee at Genuine Parts Co., now NAPA.
Anyone remember the BBQ on Park Street near Edison Av. between Riverside Park and the train station?  It had a neon sign and a pig that ran across the building.  I think that it may have been Tad's.
