Perhaps way off topic for this board but thought I would post this anyway.

Not sure if you were able to catch last night's movie on Glen Campbell and his struggle with Alzheimer's on CNN. It was both very touching and sad to watch at the same time. And kudos to him and his family for putting it out there. I kick myself now for not seeing him at The Florida Theatre back in 2012 when he was touring and he was well into the disease by then. I can't imagine how he got it together each night and was able to perform when you see how far gone he was by that point.

I mention him today as there were a couple of visits by him to Jacksonville way back when and I was involved with one of them.
So, here's my Glen Campbell story:

I was managing the Sawgrass Beach Club in 1978 (might have been '79 actually) and he came for the TPC and stayed after for a vacation with his new wife (#3!) who was really young and gorgeous and was his friend Mac Davis's ex-wife, which was kind of a scandal at the time.

Anyway, I took care of them the entire week and must say he was a very funny, friendly and polite guy just hanging out getting a tan and raptured with his new wife.
He did not act the least bit like a major star, which at that time he still was.
Totally unpretentious and treated everyone like he was their equal.
At the end of his stay he wanted a list of the staff names that had waited on him which I gave to him. He came back with a packet of envelopes with each name on them.

He told me to distribute them after he had left which I did.
In each envelope (there were about 15 I think) was a crisp $100 bill.
The staff and I were stunned and in awe of this huge celebrity who would take the time to do that, not to mention his generosity.
A true southern gentleman and class act.

Godspeed Glen Campbell

Thanks for sharing this.  I'm a fan of his music, and that's a great story.
The tourist would realize at once that he had struck the Land of Flowers - the City Beautiful!

That is a great story - thanks for sharing it with us.

I saw him at the FL Theatre in '12.  He had a computer monitor on stage at his feet with the lyrics displayed (I guess).  He could still play guitar quite well.  His daughter played with the band and stayed close to him and had to rescue him a couple of times when he got lost.  Good show.
