Just saw a few days ago that Pattaya Thai is working to open in the recently vacated Soups On location at 1526 King St. Looks like Riverside will finally be able to get their Pad Thai on.

We could get our Pad Thai on at Hawkers.  It's time for the good stuff.  Oh baby.

Not one bit. I think it just confused their customers who were expecting to have soup.

Fingers crossed it's more like Pok Pok than the standard, anywhere in America, Thai.

I'd LOVE a Pok Pok scenario, but don't count on it. I do believe there is (was?) another Pattaya Thai in JAX. Much better than your average fare, but not that kind of Thai...

It's about thyme! AmIright??

Hawkers has a unique flavor to their padt thai, not bad. But a dedicated Thai joint will be a welcome addition for sure.

I have to be the only person in Duval county who absolutely hates Hawkers  :o

You're not alone. I don't get the hype about Hawkers either...

Not at all. Well, no, I guess I don't hate Hawkers...and in fact I eat there semi-regularly...but I consider it to be entirely inauthentic and between mediocre and average taste-wise. My continued patronage is much more an indictment of the horrendous Chinese fare, and generally poor Asian fare, available in Jacksonville.

But to the point of your post, the fact that it is as incredibly popular as it is absolutely astounds me.

There's not many places that get me too worked up over their food, but meals at Hawkers tend to rate a bit higher because of the presentation more than the food itself.

Small Plates.

I'd much rather go to Hawkers with a group of people for a pre-night out dinner than most other places because the smaller portions and tapas style plating allows everyone to order a few different things, while the sharing of food amongst your friends generates more table conversation than a typical sit-down meal at a more typical restaurant.

The food doesn't have to be great when the ambiance and experience are.  At least, that's my take on it.
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I still don't quite understand how small plates makes sharing better. Everyone gets a teaspoon of noodles.

I don't *hate* Hawkers but it does absolutely nothing for me. The price/portion ratio is awful and I realize getting good food is better than getting a lot of food but I don't think their food is particularly good or at least worth much praise.
