My immediate thought with "The Barge" could be somewhat of Jax's version of Conch House's outdoor floating dock with live music. Granted you'd have to throw some outdoor bars out there too. I know a bunch of people drive to Conch House on Sundays for Reggae Sundays. I'd be interested to see what plans they have in store for entertainment with that particular area.

Seeing whose project the Barge is*, and that their plans for events include those hip and trendy forward-thinking things that are so popular with the cultural community right now like bacon, facial hair competitions, and food trucks, I am more than a little skeptical of this project. On the other hand, my 60 year old dad out in St. Johns County thinks this is a wonderful idea and will be one of the first ones there, white socks, man sandals, jorts, and all. He's really psyched and looks forward to hearing funk and Jimmy Buffet cover bands.

It seems only fitting that the first musical act at this new venue should be El DeBarge and the Family DeBarge. Assuming he's kicked his cocaine addiction, nothing would be sweeter than to hear "Who's Johnny" softly cascading across the St. Johns River. Make it a yearly event and "DeBarge on the Barge" could become the next Lollapalooza or Bonnaroo!

And maybe Johnny Five the robot could be recommissioned & make an appearance. Cocaine, Jeri curls & a dancing sassy robot on the river. Be a helluva party.

My point is: if you read their plans for this, it seems like what my 60 year old dad would think is cool or "hip" with those who are interested in downtown culture (i.e. very out of touch): bacon, facial hair competitions, and food trucks (nothing against food trucks, just that every event seems to think they can add a relevance or coolness factor simply by having food trucks show up).  The husband of the husband/wife duo played MC to an event downtown a few months back called the "Bad Ass Men's Whiskey Night". As if the name alone (which I am sure he coined) didnt tip you off to how out of touch this guy is, his comments on the mic made it verrrrrrrry clear. 

I think this could be a successful idea if it actually had culturally forward-thinking events/ideas attached. As it stands, however, the events/ideas seem lazy and pathetically outdated by several years.

I do not think there is anything outdated or "uncool" about the first proposed idea for the barge.  Craft beer and bourbon festivals have been very successful both here in Jax and throughout the country.  I also see nothing wrong with throwing bacon into the mix.

Just barely a month after it's open the sailor fountain is already broken. It's been completely shut off for the past week. There are still several broken ground lights in-front of the Peninsula and the rain on Saturaday caused flooding under the mainstreet that still isn't completely dried up.... Who's supposed to be maintaining this stuff?

I would say report it to the Parks Department, but they are pretty busy with the blight that is love locks right now. That is much higher priority at this time.
