Planning and Development Director Calvin Burney's last day with the city is today after tendering his resignation earlier this month.
Burney, director since 2011, submitted a resignation letter to Mayor Alvin Brown on Feb. 9.

In the letter, he called working with Brown and Jacksonville citizens a "very rewarding experience" and he submitted the resignation "with much regret."

Is it a fair interpretation  to say this is akin to being fired?

I heard certain developers didn't like Burney and insisted Brown fire him to get their support.

^ most of the developers aren't supporting him anyway

Calvin Burney is a member of the Burney family with well known politico Betty Burney being first cousin to Alvin Brown.  This fact played heavily into him being appointed as planning director.

The planning department has apparently been in a bit of a mess for some time with those in power holding the view that Calvin Burney did not have adequate control of the department.  One of the main problems stems from statements being made in the department on behalf of certain developers and projects that those projects are approved and supported by the DOT which it turned out were untrue.  The situation was made more complicated by an outdated zoning department which is also giving confused and inaccurate information which impacts a number of areas in development.  It was alleged that Burney was taking his instructions from individuals of power outside of the department in order to further their agenda's. Some of those individuals members of the Civic Council.  So Burney was given the chance to resign.

Any ideas on why he would be fired?

Environmental Ethics? That was Vince Seibold

Did anyone see the lead editorial in the TU today? There are two pictures and the headline is Mayport village is ready for its revival.
So at the 2/12/15 town hall meeting at the Marine Science Center is shown a picture of Calvin Burney. He submitted his resignation letter on 2/9/15. OK?

Does anyone remember a John Meserve? or what else happened with some of those land deals. Is it time for another 10 year CD to come due?
