Don’t forget, the City’s Downtown “Movies in the Park” series starts Friday with the showing of “Madagascar” in Treaty Oak Park in San Marco at 8 p.m. The next is “Ghostbusters” on April 11, “Hook” on April 18 and “Goonies” on April 25. Parking in the Suddath garage is free and attendees can bring food, lawn chairs and blankets, but no alcohol.

This is pretty cool. Have they done this in the past or is this new?

I like the events, and don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but...

but couldn't a better slate of movies be picked?

Hook?  Madagascar?

Strange, that these movies are kiddie films, yet aren't most kids in bedtime by 8pm?

If we want to attract people downtown, let's have some films that attract newbies to downtown.

Casablanca
Star Wars
Raiders of the Lost Ark
12 Angry Men
To Kill A Mockingbird
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Classics, none of which are rated R - and would bring a better crowd, I'd suspect.  We'll see how turnout is this month - I hope we can pull off a spring and autumn version of this event!

The movies take place on weekend nights when kids aren't usually in bed until much later than 8pm so I don't think that will be a problem.  Jax beach has been doing movies during the summer at the pavillion for years and everytime I've been the place is filled with kids well into the late night.

I think that Bueller woudl ahve been a great choice, but I'd love to go see Goonies or Ghostbusters.

This reminds me of what they do in Midtown Atlanta's Piedmont Park, just theirs is only eveyr now and then, but I think because of the drought, its been put on hold for now.

As I was unavail when San Marco screened Ghostbusters I'm very excited about next Friday.  Besides, drawing people to Treaty Oak, especially in the evening, will do wonders for the misconception that it's not safe that I've been hearing from burb types for years.

Jason

Damn, The Goonies!  I haven't seen that one in years but its still one of my favorites.

Hey, is this event still going on? If so, when does it take place? I'd love to know, I'm going to be moving to Riverside and would love to go to that.  Let me know.

The event has already ended for this year, but should start back up in the Spring of 2009.

I was wondering about this event. I found it when I googled "Jacksonville Outdoor Film Festival" How long has Jacksonville been doing this kind of event? Has any one here been to one, if so how was the turn out? Didn't Jax Beach have their own version of outdoor films? I think one is coming up tomorrow.

Right On! That is dope man. I'm curious though, I have been to that park a few times. It(Treaty Oak Park) didn't seem big enough for an Outdoor Movie/Picnic type of location, metrojacksonville.com never ran a story on it, I would thinks cats on here would be all over something like that. I just texted one of my girlfriends in Jax, she told they showing Beetle Juice tomorrow and she going to it. One of the links I found said "No alcoholic beverages are allowed"...I'm not even a drinker, but cmon Jax, whats up with that? I could see in the burbs but at one of the central parks? lol I have never even seen Beetle Juice either...I kinda want to now.

So the turn out is good huh, is it anyway connected with the Jacksonville Film Festivals?

Why no alcohol?

Where exactly do they put the screen? And how big is it?

Its one of those inflateable screens with just a normal  everyday office projector aimed at it with a  dvd player hooked to the projector. They have some speakers set up for audio. There is no alcohol because it is geared towards kids, Beatlejuice is a bit much for kids IMHO, but they have baloon animals, etc, and kids play areas, and this is a public space so no alcohol.

I saw E.T. a couple weeks ago and it was enjoyable. I was surprised how well you can see the screen from the far end of the park.
