What's So Big About JACKSONVILLE Terminal?

How about within a single generation, want to see where we were, and where we are, under the highway leadership of the last 50 years? What could you and I have seen walking in the door of the great station, and recording the announcements? If we could only go back with a digital video recorder, hind-sight being 20 x 20. Do you REALLY think Amtrak is going to continue to ignore THIS market? HA! Mark my words, it's coming back big time, but as a city we must either be there with the terminal, or lose it all...

I hope like hell a bunch of people get together and light a fire under our city leaders asses, and get something going! Jacksonville isn't improving, its going to the you know what! I'm only 26 years old, I have no idea what it must of been like, but from being a member of these forums for awhile, and a long time viewer before that, my frustrations match everyone else!

The ACL "Montgomery Champion" in this scene has just cleared Waycross in is coming home.

Deathstar, "Welcome aboard" as the steps to these trains always said. What was amazing in Jacksonville was the amount of switching that went on, with trains of different northern railroads (like the Frisco or Louisville and Nashville) rolling into town, then rolling south for both coasts, as part of one of the FEC - ACL or other trains. The fact that we attracted trains from the Frisco, Illnois Central, Louisville and Nashville or Pennsy, says volumes about the market here. These railroads didn't even get close to Jacksonville, yet they sent flagship trains running the length of their own systems only to end up here! Often these single through trains were the effort of 3 or 4 railroads.

At one time we captured the "busiest station in the world" title (during the great Florida Land boom of the 1920's), then went on to build the worlds largest railway express station. The railway express station record stood until JTA tore down the buildings for the new bus garages. I'm certain we also held some records for the amount of mail moved or transfered at a US Railway Post Office facility. As a hub we are awesome, and with Amtrak plans to return to frequent service to Florida, we better get moving.
