Robert Montgomery: Fant Vs. Renner

Jay Fant vs Paul Renner - Favorite Sons of Jacksonville's "Good Old Boy Network".  In 2012 First Guaranty Bank went under and was taken over by CenterState Bank - a victim of the avarice that took place during the housing bubble. The person in charge of the bank during this period was Jay Fant who is now running for the Florida House of Representatives for the seat vacated by Daniel Davis. His opponent is Paul Renner an attorney and Republican Party activist.

Jay Fant ( R )           5,913   50
Paul Renner ( R )   5,908   50

This is what happens when there is no opposition party fielding a candidate that offers an alternative vision in a race for an unchallenged seat in Tallahassee; a handful of people get to choose representation for over a million people.

More like a half-million (470,033) from the 2010 census.  But your point is well taken.  We won't know the results of this one until tomorrow at the earliest.  Recounts and more recounts necessary.  Shame there isn't a "None of These" choice.

16.77% voter turnout, pathetic!

The political analysts all said Fant had more money and he should be able to beat Renner handily. Political Analysts....lol!
And, that $115 will save Jacksonville from financial ruin. - Mayor John Peyton

"This is a game-changer. This is what I mean when I say taking Jacksonville to the next level."

And Renner had the entire Republican Machine behind him.... the better to pay back south Florida friends who wish to be speaker in the coming years....   Fant is grassroots.  for Renner to lose with these endorsements is telling.

Paul Renner has the following endorsements:

Ron DeSantis

United States Congressman

"As a fellow Navy veteran, Paul Renner has defended our country overseas and is well-versed on the principles that make America unique.  As a state representative, he will protect and defend our Constitution, champion conservative values and lead the fight for limited government in Tallahassee."

John Thrasher

Florida State Senator

"I am proud to offer my endorsement to Paul Renner today in his campaign for the Florida House.  I admire his service to our country and our community, and I am confident he will make an exemplary member of the Florida Legislature.  Paul's conservative values coupled with his background in law will make him a talented, thoughtful leader that will serve the residents of Jacksonville well."

Steve Wise

Former Florida State Senator

"I am excited to see that Paul is running for the House District 15 seat.  Northeast Florida needs a proven conservative leader who can be a strong voice for education, ensuring parents have the rights and choices they deserve in education, as well as protecting the future of homeschooling in Florida.  I stand with Paul in his election for House District 15."

Daniel Davis

Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce President and CEO

Incumbent Florida State Representative

"Paul fought for America in Desert Storm and Afghanistan, and he fought crime as a state prosecutor.  He's the proven, trusted leader we need fighting for us in Tallahassee."

John Rutherford

Duval County Sheriff

"Paul Renner deserves to represent the voters of Northeast Florida, as a man with a proven track record of public service, a respected business lawyer and prosecutor."

Ronnie Fussell

Duval County Clerk of Courts and Former Jacksonville City Council President

"Paul Renner understands there must be a balance between government and business in order to create and sustain jobs in Jacksonville.  I applaud our business community's endorsement of Paul, and I am confident he will be a conservative, pro-growth voice in the Florida Legislature."

Ray Holt

Jacksonville City Councilman

"Northeast Florida's veteran population needs a leader in Tallahassee with military experience.  I support Paul Renner because his 23-year service in the U.S. Navy best equips him to protect our country's heroes here at home."

Alberta Hipps

Former Jacksonville City Council President

"Paul Renner understands how vital the Cecil Commerce Center is to Westside jobs and, moreover, Jacksonville's future economic growth.  Jacksonville is America's logistics hub, and I know Paul will make supporting the development of Cecil Commerce Center a top priority in the Florida Legislature.  That's why I am supporting Paul Renner for State House District 15."

Phil Vogelsang

Jacksonville Beach City Councilman

Fant should have been able to beat Renner with no problem, but he ran an expensive and mediocre campaign.

Fant is a first class light weight.. See what money can do..
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference

LOL...  The entire machine behind Renner, and he still lost.  Blame the negative ads...

BridgeTroll

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Isn't that the way it always is? The politician you don't like is naturally part of the "Good Old Boy Network". No doubt you'd be a member if invited, but since you aren't, you can call them names, one that is nothing but a cliché. No doubt you have your own favorite "Good Old Boy Network" too. Guess that makes you feel good.

Fant put $150,000 of his own money into the race, the last week with TV ads. He outspent Renner 4 to 1, and still only won by 2 votes. He had to buy the election to win. If you place a laurel on the new state rep with these notes, well then, I suppose we can expect GREAT things from Mr. Fant in Tallahassee as he battles Obamacare for all of us, lol!

According to the Florida Division of Elections Fant put in $160,000 in the last week and that brought his spending to a 1.47 to 1 margin over Renner.  This figure does not include the money spent by third parties on behalf of each candidate, an area where Renner had a distinct advantage.

While Fant most likely had an advantage in overall spending, it was not anywhere near what it was thought to be.

When you can keep PAC money out of elections, wake me from my nap. They are now part of the fabric of elections and show no sign of ever leaving. Most of that money on Renner's side came from PACs. He does not live on the river or have access to what Fant accessed.

The perception on the street is that Fant bought the election, which makes him no better than Rick Scott, who did the same thing.

All elections are paid for by someone.

Take the Renner sign out of your yard and use some mouthwash to get rid of the taste of sour grapes.
