We do sprawl the same way.  I can't tell you the number of times I've heard politicians claim that we're suburban because that's what the general population prefers.  People prefer decent wages, a clean city, well lit streets, routine trash pick-up, good schools, etc.  However, when it comes to build infrastructure and land use, it's all about public policy and infrastructure investment.
