I still think it's in the taxpayer's best interest to simply buy a vacant warehouse some where in the urban core.  When you consider the amount of available warehouses in areas like the Beaver Street corridor, Springfield Warehouse District and Talleyrand, it's hard to imagine that something pretty cheap can't be found.

Oh, and for the health of Gateway Mall and that Norwood commercial strip, the old JCPenney space is a horrible location for SOE. That center needs to be redeveloped. The worst thing we can do is stunt the possibilities by sticking a low traffic generating warehouse facility in the middle of it.

From the articles I've read, one reason the SOE doesn't like Gateway is that the building is crap.  Elevators and escalators don't work.  The roof leaks - potentially damaging millions of dollars worth of electronic elections equipment.  I think there are HVAC problems.  Gateway's proposed lease supposedly includes building repairs.  Why don't they do that NOW?  Their tenant (the SOE) had been complaining about the problems for years.

Despite what Chris Hand says - governments DO secure leased space through RFPs.  Kill all three bills and put out an RFP - and include past performance as one of the criteria.

[adding after Lake's post] - the RFP would certainly be open to repurposing those old warehouses - good idea!

Again Charles, Politics and back door discussions are the reason there was no RFP in spite of claims that there would be one.

Oh, Cheshire, I fully understand that ... whose local/campaign office is right across the parking lot from the SOE Gateway?  I was just expressing a hoped for ideal.  I still have  bit of idealism that hasn't been crushed by cynicism!

I think you missed that another Council committee voted to stay at Gateway

It would be pure politics if the SOE office stayed at Gateway. Are there better choices than One Imeson? Potentially. But Gateway isn't one of them.

Maybe Corrigan will join him and move his offices out of Downtown as well.  Maybe move Code Enforcement back to the Koger Center too? Come on, do the downtown shuffle!
