News helicopters are old hat.  News camera, remotely operated drones will take their place soon.  There are quadrotor drones out there that will easily carry an HD camera and the pictures can be electronically stabilized to eliminate any shake.

First station to get one will be ahead in the ratings for a while.

The simple answer Lunican is that for the most part, people are visual learners.  With traffic, we comprehend it quicker and easier when we see a picture of traffic backed up for miles versus hearing "usual slowdowns on the Buckman approaching 17 in Orange Park".  And it has been proven that having a helicopter increases your audience, when something big happens, regardless of who reported it, people will switch to that other channel to see the birds eye view.  It is a view the normal person could never get.  However, Jacksonville is not a high demand market, whoever reports the news first will just be mimicked moments later by another station and also I believe news in general will not be the traditional form we are used to in the next 5-10 years.  For instance, instead of watching the morning news I now check my Twitter and blog feeds for news and instant news is popping up on YouTube for some markets.  None with a helicopter, but that is quite alright.

It sure would have been nice to have one tonight for the fireworks. The shots from the helicopter in NYC were amazing.

They had a helicopter. It crashed and two of the three people on board died back in the late 80s.
