Non-Ivy League student sends a....well....blunt cover letter to several investment firms and the response has been overwhelming from firms trying to hire him for an internship.

That kid is a boss.

I was a Finance major in undergrad and the majority of kids submitted cover letters that were the exact opposite of this.  They would talk about how they strategically planned socials and worked on an integrated team of multiple student organizations to develop a kickball tournament.  They handled the finances for their fraternity's beer pong championships.....etc.  It was pretty impressive how much effort some kids would go to just to make their mundane college credentials sound worthwhile.  I was in a program that provided free resume critiques and I also did admissions for other student groups, so I've seen upwards of a hundred resumes and I can see why people like this guy.  He's not trying to build himself up and present himself to be something he isn't; he's just trying to meet the needs of the hiring organization.  Who wouldn't want that??

This kid seems to be suffering from a lack of self-confidence. Not to mention a bit too pleading, in my opinion. I mean, he has some balls for sending a letter that is somewhat unconventional, I suppose, but the way he words things... makes me wonder just how pessimistic he is.

I saw this same thing on Business Insider. Many people gave the kid a hard time for the spelling of 'crapp'. Apparently, potential employers were more impressed with the content than the interwebs commenters.

I think the letter shows that the kid is very confident in what he does know, and he lets the rest slide.  I would take a humble kid willing to work hard over some over confident slacker.  It sounds like this guy is just wanting to work hard and hoping that somebody will let him.

It could just be me, but all I'm seeing is some skillful manipulation in there. It's pretty classic stuff, too.
