I honestly can't believe that celebratory gunfire is a thing.

Don't bullets have identifying marks to the gun that fired them?  Can't they track them down from that?  Assuming the gun was legally purchased and the markings weren't filed down.

Its been going on forever. Wild west days it was very common & EVERYONE did it. Nowadays its only idiots doing it. I don't know ANY responsible gun owner who would think this is a good idea, esp in a populated area. You only see it in gang areas, areas that are blighted with usually other illegal activities going on, etc. Not saying Spr is that, but it def has some of that element still.

I remember watching a Gangland episode where they talked about it happening every year in a project in Chicago. Like dozens of people doing it. So it def happens & it can def be worse.

QuoteCabriniâ€"Green often gained press coverage for its chaotic New Year's Eve celebrations when gang members fired guns into the air causing police to block off nearby streets every year.

^ It's not limited to "gang" areas....  Rural, suburban, urban.  It doesn't matter where you are, people will fire thier guns if given the chance.  Some pop 'em in the dirt or a tree, but most shoot up.

I saw a Mythbusters thing on this and they seemed to make it look like it wasn't so bad - like the bullet wouldn't do much more than give you a bit of a headache or a cut/lump on the head if it hit you. Maybe I am not quite remembering it well - but it definitely stands out in my mind as them saying it wasn't fatal.

Anybody else see that episode?

I'm used to Mythbusters being wrong (or at least playing a bit fast and loose with the scientific method), but still...

Yeah if it's shot directly up and comes staight down it won't realyl do anything but hurt if it lands on your head.  the biggest issue is when people shoot at and angle to the horizon and it doesn't just fall out of the sky, but is still travelling at a high speed horizontal to the ground.

I'm talking about firing your gun in the air like an idiot in populated areas, not firing guns in general. There's a difference in doing it on your rural property in the middle of nowhere & doing it in a condensed urban area.

^ My point is that it is certainly not limited to urban "gang" areas.  I've heard gunfire in nice gated communities on the 4th and on New Years as well as my old westside neighborhood off of Normandy and in Murray Hill....  It doesn't matter where you are, it is still reckless and dangerous.

Dog Walker

Falling bullets can kill.  They fall at over 300 MPH+ depending on the caliber and shape.  They frequently penetrate roofs and cause leaks.  Just ask your local roofer.  The boy on the Riverwalk was lucky that it didn't hit him in the head and that bullet could have come from a mile away.

Stupid, just stupid thing to do and there were lot of stupid people in my neighborhood Monday night.

You NEVER shoot a gun unless you have a very good idea of where the bullet is going to end up.
When all else fails hug the dog.

(There's a difference in doing it on your rural property in the middle of nowhere) Forrest Gump would have said: Stupid is as stupid does.

I believe you, I've just never ever heard of that going on in gated communities/suburbs before.

RockStar

I've said it before and I'm not the first to say it: The problem isn't the guns; it's the bullets. We sell ammunition in WalMart. We won't sell firecrackers or bottle rockets, but 9mm rounds? no problem. The gun is just a tool. The weapon is the bullet.

Nothing in the constitution talks about a right to own enough ammo to take on a battalion. Make em $50/bullet, registered in a database. Easier to follow the trail of bullet casings than the gun that shot them.

Just a thought.
