Lead rain downtown - more fallout from New Year's Eve gunfire

So maybe you heard about the 8 year old boy hit in the foot by a bullet falling from the sky during the fireworks on New Year's Eve.

I wasn't surprised to hear about it -- I was home on the 31st, and lost count of the gunshots that I could hear from my living room downtown.

I was surprised to find what you'll see here:

Pistol round looks like a .380 auto or maybe .40S&W, and the rifle round probably 7.62xSomething. I gave the rifle round to the neighbor, seemed like the least I could do...

Given that it made the above hole in his truck.

You can see more photos here.  :o

A bit surprised this does not happen more often.  I hope the police were notified.  >:(
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

I didn't call them. It's pretty obvious to me what happened and there isn't anything that can be done now. If it were my truck that had been damaged, I probably would have called. Our neighborhood watch coordinator & ShAdCo rep is aware, and if I know him he'll be in touch with them about it for whatever it's worth.

I honestly can't believe that celebratory gunfire is a thing.

Don't bullets have identifying marks to the gun that fired them?  Can't they track them down from that?  Assuming the gun was legally purchased and the markings weren't filed down.
So I said to him: Arthur, Artie come on, why does the salesman have to die? Change the title; The life of a salesman. That's what people want to see.

I heard gunfire over in Riverside during New Years Eve the cops can't be everywhere. And people should know that shooting a gun in the air that the bullet has to come down. ::)

wonder why they shoot them then?
I would have to say it makes the person doing it feel cool?

surprised to hear that it happens in the urban areas.  It would seem that it would mainly be a suburb/rural thing.

The microstamp is interesting... from what I know of it I would harbor no objection.  But it would not have helped in the blfair situation.  As indicated in the article... the firing pin would be stamped and the pin would imprint the primer of the spent cartridge.  The actual bullet has no such marking... only the spent cartridge could be traced to the gun.

Springfield New Years Eve night was pretty crazy with the gun shots.  All night long people were shooting their guns to 'celebrate'.

They were doing the same thing over near UNF.

Widespread responsible gun ownership, all night.

Haven't you heard, Stephan?  Obama's going to take their guns away.  It's all about defiance and patriotism.

Those kids that got hit by stray bullets just aren't patriotic enough.  Shame on their parents for not teaching them about gun and bullet safety! ::)

Growing up i spent all my christmas' and new years in New Orleans visiting family. During the entire holiday season there they would air public service annoucements on all the TV stations letting people know that "Falling Bullets Kill".

I'm not sure whether PSA's of that sort have an impact, but I'm sure there is a population of people who don't think about the fact that what goes up must come down.

Smart idea I would like to see these commercials played days before New Years Eve and other Holidays in which Stupid people shoot firearms into the air.
