Giving guns to 'bad' teachers...

When I read the letters from readers section of today's Times-Union, I sorta threw up a little in my mouth.  The same segment of our community that has piled on in the campaign to paint teachers as a profession about as respectable as the town whore or the local loan shark is the same group that believes that we should allow educators to carry firearms into the classroom.  This duality of thinking mad my sinus-infection addled mind spin with disbelief.

There are many who trumpet the cause of private, charter, parochial and home schools because they dare not trust their children with the 'incompetent' and 'union-coddled' class of people we call teachers.  When incidents draw attention to the true worth of public educators, we are ready to arm these same people with guns?

I am glad that we are thinking with clear minds about the real importance of teachers such as the ones who lost their lives protecting their students, but I think we need to follow our hearts and take our brains with us as we think of crafting policy that can keep our schools safe.
