Sorry to hear this happened to Chamblins.

Is any place deserving of a robbery?  :o :o :o :o

Ummm.. Nope.  And my message was not meant to insinuate that some other place should have been robbed.  :o

I cannot be proud of our society when we have so many fellows like this who, by whatever occasions or circumstances, have ended up being desperate, and without an opportunity or preparedness for work.  I cannot turn from them and simply say, you…… you thief, you worthless scum, you have failed, and therefore you are not a man.  Our society is failing.  We are seeing the fruits of its failing.

+1. If only more people felt this way. There are always two victims: the guy who acted, and the people who were acted upon. I can't sit back and fall into the "glad they caught him" crowd. Personally, citizens rallying around the downfall of another human being make me quite perturbed. We are too quick, as a society, to 'blame the bad guy'. This is a human being who was desperate enough to steal. I blame not so much the actor, but the society which built the actor. I don't believe the actor is inherently a bad man, but has been shaped into a bad man from decades of unfulfilled needs, societal 'brick walls', racism, and oppression. Our society is a society of 'haves' and 'have-nots'. I can't help but to mourn and feel for the 'have-nots'.

Ron, I'm a huge fan of yours, but it's pretty bad form calling the guys who arrested the cat who robbed your store "the gestapo".

What's the difference? Gestapo, police, charlies, gendarmerie, Maréchaussée, NKVD, all the same.

By definition, the police are a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility.

Change out the word 'police' with 'gestapo'...same shit, different day.

In ’61, in southern California.  I was hungry with no money.  Hearing there was food at the Salvation Army, I went there.  In a room with about fifteen others, I listened to a talk about Jesus.  I was desperate for food, so I listened.  The talk seemed very long because I was hungry.  The food was good, because I was hungry.  As my hunger faded, so did my memory of Jesus.  I will always remember the food from the Salvation Army.

REALLY? In 1961 (I was also in LA... Well, North Long Beach to be exact) Clifton's Cafeteria in LA had a policy since the 1930's that if you couldn't pay, you were just as welcome as the high rollers. In 61, Clifton's was still in fine form. It finally declined and only recently has been renovated and reopened. I'm not sure if the new owners are continuing the policy.

Hey Ron? Would it be possible to offer this guy a job? Even part-time, it might be the life changing experience he needs. Follow your heart my friend.

Not exactly, the Gestapo was the secret police force of the Nazi Government, their operations were fairly limited, sedation and treason being their main focus. They WERE noted for brutal interrogation methods, something we generally avoid in Jacksonville.

It's good that Ben/Ron brought this up as most people immediately think of mass murders, and death camps and the holocaust, but that wasn't the Gestapo's duty. The camps and the executions were under the control of the Schutzstaffel more commonly known as the SS. We better hope we don't have a single JSO officer operating in the manner of the Schutzstaffel.

Gestapo? ..... sensitive word to some I suppose.  Of course, Gestapo means the police.  I used the word not as denigrating to anyone at this point, nor to give any specific meaning other than police.  The word "police" just seemed pretty boring.

But yes, Ock, it is possible to hire this fellow, and about 200,000 others.  We get two or three job requests per day.  We've never placed an ad.  People need work all the time.  When things allow, I try to hire someone who seems to be at a disadvantage in the job market.  Sometimes it works out.

One of my dreams is to gain the Lotto for a couple of hundred million.  Then I would start some kind of manufacturing .... something requiring low or medium skills so that I could hire many of these fellows and females who need work.  That would be my dream.  We could produce something.  These people out of work could work if they wanted.  How many would want to work is another question.  But at least the opportunity would be there.

Of course, I could also take that few million and buy a yacht... maybe two.  I could travel the world, making people wait on me.  I could buy an airplane too.  I could buy a townhouse in Manhattan.  I could buy a few autos worth a million dollars each.  I could send the money to secret bank accounts, somehow avoiding taxes.... so I could buy another yacht.  I could send great sums to support the GOP, so that I could have in power guys to assist me in keeping more of my money, guys who want to help me and the other the rich be richer..... guys who are on the side of the god who has been helping the rich for a long time.  The rich and their god are on the same side.  And they have the wonderful evangelicals along too.  It makes for a good team.

And I would invest in manufacturing companies that actually manufacture in other countries, as this is the way to maximize profits for their shareholders.  As you know, money is king.  The jobs lost are not important.

Yes, I would rather start a manufacturing plant to make something.  I could hire many people who want to work, and who can work.  The greatest pleasure would be to visit the plant and see all the formerly idle people working at making something useful.  All I need is to get the few hundred million.  A dream.

We never say "I can not afford it".

Rather; "How can I afford it"?

You dream is noble. I often think of the same thing.... How can I help secure a future for all those who have worked for me, and with me... and those who would come along?

Still working on it.

I'm sorry to hear that Chamblin's was robbed, but so thankful that the thief was nabbed before he could get away. Yeah, they probably should have said that the Crookstoppo got him rather than the Gestapo because he was certainly not a good guest. Way to go, Chamblin Gang!
