With a storm of this size, you'd expect no more than 4 feet of surge, and that at high tide. This is more of a rain event.

Pretty much.  Winds now 70 mph off shore.  Mathews Bridge closed, which means they recorded 40 mph up there.  Worst supposed to be around 10pm.

Big Rain, and Big Winds will take us through the night.

If you live in Northside,  FEMA money should be available.

What? That isn't even possible at this point and I doubt this will cause such damage to warrant them even getting involved.

My white Chevy Van, at the Mulhall Tornado rescue effort, 1999.

Sometimes I miss the stark, ocean like, beauty of the prairie. Going outside to experience Beryl, I noted that same pink tint to the sky that we see with each tropical storm. I've lost count of how many hurricanes I've experienced, for a while, whilst moving around the south, I seemed to be able to FIND every damn one of them. Just as a footnote, I've got to say that the air feels equally unstable before a serious tornado outbreak, but it doesn't smell nearly as sweet as it does over those endless wheat fields.

Let's not forget that these tropical storms can pack rain wrapped tornadoes {the most dangerous type especially at night}. Even in the glow of city lights, you WILL NOT see a funnel in a rain wrapped tornado.

Though Florida tornadoes rarely are as strong as those in Oklahoma and environs, there have been 33 EF3 and 2 EF4 storms in Florida since 1950. Also be alert that FLORIDA RANKS NUMBER 1 IN TORNADOES PER 10,000 SQUARE MILES.

If you hear the roar of a 'drive through car wash' in the night, get away from windows, lowest level, interior room, under sturdy furniture.

In case you would like a diversion... Back in some of my old stomping grounds, the drama continues... LIVE.

Just be safe my friends, we have SO MUCH work to do in our city.

Again, too early to make that call and do you realize that FEMA will only get involved if a certain amount of $ damage is done? This storm will likely fall short of that so this will be a local and state issue unless Beryl produces catastrophic inland flooding, which that itself is highly unlikely because the ground will be able to soak a lot of water up.

Will there be surge, of course, but I doubt anything worse than what we say with Fay.

Reed, the funds will be available.

To reinforce the fact, it's an election year...

Did Fay come up the Saint Johns River?

Fay, Faye.... Whatever
Oh yeah, because that'll make SUCH a big difference.

State resources have to be stretched and overwhelmed for the feds to get involved.
