Put sex orientation bill on November ballot, Jacksonville councilman says

We really do need as many supporters as possible to come on Tuesday night to City Council for the Public Hearing on the bill.

They need to see that there are thoughtful people of all varieties in Jacksonville who support the bill being passed by the Council and signed by the Mayor.  That's the best way to show CM Carter that we want action now, instead of putting it off for months and months.  The quicker the City does this and gets it behind us, the better for all concerned.

Jimmy

There's some late-breaking news on this tonight.  The JAX Chamber has voted to urge the City Council to pass the bill.

Don't wait, don't take a straw poll, don't dither or delay.  Pass the bill and let's get on with it.

This bill would never had materialized had our Mayor supported it as he claimed we would. Unfortunately, he was too busy expending all of his political capital on moldy, broken furniture in a populist attempt to suck up to a fringe electorate that didn't and will not vote for him under any circumstances.

I firmly put this deeply saddening legislation and its aftermath at the feet of Mayor Macbeth.

They are a bunch of cowards. Again a big city that can deal with "big" city issues. And that Kim Daniels is an absolute nutcase. This has nothing to do with religion. This has to do with equal treatment. Nowhere does the bible state that homosexuals should be outcast of society.

And sadly , people like her have not a clue of how to do their job.  Why exactly was she elected?

it is this type of "Christian" that just nauseates me .  They think not only that they are better than everyone else, but has a right to be judge, jury , and executioner.   I so wish she and several other council people could be FIRED , Immediately.

I'm not sure how I feel about our Mayor , either.  Perhaps still a better choice than his opponent.

It is rather ridiculous that we pay taxes and work just like others, but "Christians" like some of our esteemed council hold the cards on granting us equal rights.   I'm pretty sick of it, and sick of people that think they have the right to say that we do not have any.

Tomorrow night is a big night for the HRO bill.  The City Council will hold its public hearing on the bill.

The TU is out with a new story analyzing the Mayor's complex political position.  And some of the comments to the story sort of set the stage for what I'm guessing we'll hear a lot about tomorrow night.  Deviance, perversion, etc.  http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2012-05-21/story/mayor-alvin-browns-position-human-rights-ordinance-could-be-tricky

People here on MJ love Jacksonville - that's why I stick around.  Please think about coming down to City Council tomorrow night to show your support for something I genuinely believe will make Jacksonville a better place for us all.

Timkin I am a black Christian and I can tell you... Mr Brown is being quiet because of the black church. He has was right for the city in the left hand and nagging judgemental christians on the right hand. I never understood why the black church is SO against homosexuality and everything else seems to be fair game. I hope he makes the right decision for the city or he will not get a second term.

It is going to be a rather interesting event. I feel it's ridiculous, because so many ignorant, close-minded people behave as if homosexuality is some some sort of disease that takes over. Gay people don't ride a bike any differently, don't write a check any different, and certainly don't breathe any different. I am a heterosexual, big deal? Do I "breathe straight"? Do I "eat straight?" Do I walk outside and breathe in the morning air straight? Of course not. Meaning gays just love differently than I. That's all. Who we love has nothing to do with how well we drive a car or do our jobs.

If sexual orientation isn't added to Jacksonville's anti discrimination law, then how can it even be called an anti-discrimination law? It must apply to everything.

There are many black Christians who are for this bill, not the least of whom is Warren Jones, who introduced it. The mayor's silence on the issue is sad.

Jimmy I will be there, and Arash and a number of the interns (liveblogging etc)

I hope every person who values their own civil rights will be there to join us!
I'm hoping to be there. In any case UNF will be well represented.

Twenty years from now, the same arguments will be made in favor of lifestyles encouraging relations between adults/children, parent/child,  brother/sister, etc.   It has already started.  This forum and its members will be the beacon of support for those lifestyles as well.  If it feels good, do it, right?  Those who believe different will be greeted with terms like "bigot", "close minded", etc.   Its the MO here.

This is going to be a circus. Get there early and stay until the sun comes up. That is how long it is going to be.

40 years ago people were making the same argument against interracial marriage and the civil rights movement. You're on the wrong side of history and the comparison that you're trying to draw is ridiculous.

Twenty years from now, you'll look like even more of a troglodyte than you do now, which is really saying something.
