I don't if it's that i just noticed or what, but they took down the two antennas from the top of the Modis tower, anyone know what's going on?

Lunican

I noticed they were gone.

Here is a shot before they disapeared.

They are gone, and now all 4 corners of the tower have the red FAA beacon on them, except they don't flash.

I like the tower better w/o them. It looked like a messed up Chase Tower from Indianapolis.

I wouldn't be surprised if the owners wanted them gone, they were and eye sore IMO.

Also, now BOA is the tallest in height and pinnacle height, so change wikipedia page!

SEE I told you so! We're just waiting for Zeppelin to get to BOA downtown

How sweet it is!

I always got use to seeing the Modis Tower with those twin antennas. I always like them. I thought it gave that building a neat identity. It wouldn't be the same without them. Now, I'm trying to get use of seeing it that way. But I really hope it is not permanent. Still, all n' all, the Modis Tower is one of my favorite buildings in downtown. Hopefully, they might bring those twin antennas back soon. Who knows 8).

I kinda like them too.  I wonder what's going on?

BridgeTroll

Perhaps they were removed in preparation for the July 4th fireworks extravaganza... :o
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

See today's Jax Daily Reocrd on this issue. The towers had been out of use 20 years.

"There has been a small change to the Downtown skyline that you may not have noticed. The two tall antennas that had been on top of Independent Square since it was the Independent Life Building have been removed. According to Dan Frey, property manager for Eola Capital, they hadn’t been used by radio companies for almost 20 years and had become what he called a “maintenance liability.” "

Of course it has to do with liability. what doesnt these days?

RiversideGator

I think he meant it cost too much to maintain, not that someone was about to get sued.

Jason

Not used for 20 years?!  They weren't used very long at all.

Not necessarily-- a big hurricane comes through and those things get ripped off and land on something or someone? Liability like a motherf**ker.

And...it's one thing to maintain them when they are being used, but to fork money out of your pocket for maintenance when no one is using them is useless and pointless; and of course as everyone mentioned, the legal liability if they topple off in a storm, etc.

Surprised... I really hadn't noticed the antennas were gone.

Of course they're not used, look out on Southside BLVD, that's where they went.

Now, if AT&T can clean up the jumbled mess atop their building.
