Stumbled upon this website and really enjoyed it.

If you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth a look:

KenFSU

Thanks!

Hate to be that guy who bumps his own thread, but there is some truly great stuff on this site that I haven't seen anywhere else.

Well worth a look if you haven't already :)

Thanks for this.  Great find and contribution to the institutional knowledge of the board.

Dog Walker

If it wasn't for Loyd Sandgren we wouldn't know what Jacksonville looked like in the past.
When all else fails hug the dog.

BridgeTroll

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Anyone have any info on the "Arena" at Main and Beaver that is referenced in several photographs?

That was "The Arena", a blandly named wrestling and sports venue also known by such unwieldy but descriptive names as the "Main and Beaver Street Arena". It hosted a surprising number of matches, including, obviously, women's matches, in the 30's, 40's, and 50's.

There are more pictures from Florida Memory:

Here's an amusing story on a notable bout featuring champion matswoman Mildred Burke, by the late, great Bill Foley:

And here's an advertisement featuring the Champ herself...
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?
