Ever Wondered about the Explosive Growth of For-Profit Colleges in Jax?

There's no question that some people have good experiences with for-profit colleges (or else the issue would be much easier to solve). However, the problem with them is systemic. For every one person who comes out of them with a job that pays enough to pay off their debt, there are dozens-at least-who take out loans to cover the huge tuition and then can't find a job when they graduate (or don't graduate at all), and too often they default on their debt. This happens in for-profits at an exponentially higher rate than it does at real schools. And in the case of federal financial aid, it's the taxpayers who get stuck with the bill.

I do agree that not all for-profits are equally bad, and I also believe that some of the better institutions would be able to adapt to non-profit status and improved regulations over institutional output. Some of them are moving in that direction already.

Incidentally, I also agree with Ock That there are serious problems with public higher ed in Florida. There is no clear vision or a mechanism to institute one. But I believe even that major problem would be easier to resolve if we fixed the issue of federal financial aid.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?
