Nice update. Wish you would include pictures of Stonewall and Chelsea St. on McCoys Creek especially given the announcement of 220 Riverside.

Also some pics Of the removal of the bridge and pilings on Hogans Creek by Bay St. The new signage and pics of Shipyards/Landmar. Its not being reported anywhere. From my understanding, Paul Davis Restorations will be relocated their business to the old Chevy Parts Depot in Springfield's warehouse district.

http://www.pdrestoration.com/index.aspx

They had been held up because of the HPC's opposition to their plans to replace the structure's windows.

Quotehowever, first they must do the battle of the windows.

At the HPC meeting last night, I listened while a business owner talked about his plans to move his thriving business from Mandarin and relocate to Springfield's warehouse district using the landmark located at 2111 Liberty St (the brick building south of the railroad tracks).

This building is significant, architecturally and historically.  It is important b/c it is located in the graveyard of empty warehouses.  This business is important b/c it will be filled with hungry people needing to eat lunch, buy gas, shop at the antique stores, and perhaps buy houses to live in nearby.

But we are getting all tripped up in the old steel windows which yes are important architecturally and yes are covered under all sorts of historic guidelines and yes we all love the old glass BUT, the owner does not want to change the brick facade, does not want to make any changes to this building he appears to love, he just wants to be able to run the heat and the AC without killing him.

We must look at this differently.

If we don't use these buildings, we will lose these buildings.  We must (yes, while honoring the past and the important features as windows) allow businesses a reasonable way to repurpose.  They do not buy these buildings to open a museum.

We have made many mistakes in the past allowing developers to tear down historic structures.  Let's have a sustainable plan to deal with development in our significant structures which both encourages growth and respects preservation.  I believe this man's plan does.

I URGE the HPC to help, not hinder, in the development of the warehouse district.

I believe they were granted window replacement approval last week.

Love the iron structure in front of the Derby On Park.  I drove by for the first time yesterday.  Is it part of the project?  What's the story about it?

Any more info on the sculpture going up in Five Points? In related news, I noticed someone has chopped off a toe on the brand new bronze eagle statue in Memorial Park. I think one of the arrows is gone as well. What the hell?

what is the story on the art in front of the Derby?

I couldn't take it anymore and drove over during lunch to get a better look at the sculpture.  I was pleasantly surprised to see Robert Noelke's name on the base for the piece he titled "Manifest Destiny".  As luck would have it, I know Robert and called him.

The artwork just finished up a show in South Florida and needed a temporary home.  Robert and his wife are part of the 5 Points Merchant Association and are trying to bring more public art to the area.  He said it is temporary, but that we should expect to see more in the future.  I really hope that their efforts are supported by RAP and COJ.  We desparately need more of this kind of expression and commitment to public art in Jacksonville.

Yeah, what's up with the rash of bad restaurant names lately, Tapa That, Alphadog Grill, Goozlepipe & Guttyworks ...

Ok, what would you name your new restaurant specializing in hotdogs, tapas place, and Belgian beer restaurant???

What's wrong with putting a little humor or fun into your name?? Let's back off these business owners and just be glad they're here.

Since we are already steering off topic here, I visited Alpha Dog for the first time yesterday and really liked the place. The food is good and I like the setup. They price themselves well for the product and have some good specials. I hope they can get the permitting worked out for the back patio. It looks like a really cool space.
