In 1928, after supplying millwork for buildings in the Florida boom, he returned to his love of boat building, opening a company in Jacksonville. It built pleasure yachts, often advertised with scantily clad â€" for the period â€" women. For years, he wrote an irreverent column, “Huck Says,” for a boating magazine, full of his musings on the yachting scene. And he had a megaphone he used to bellow at owners of Huckins yachts who tried to overload their fine craft.

His granddaughter, Cindy Purcell, and her husband, Buddy, now run the company he started, which after World War II moved from East Fourth Street down to Lakeshore Boulevard. There it continues to build and repair pleasure boats.

I'm in the process of highlighting the past of industrial buildings along the abandoned railroad ROW between Springfield and the Eastside. Here's one nugget worth mentioning in this thread:



This East 4th Street building on the border of Springfield and the Eastside is the location where Huckins operated while producing the PT boat.
