Please Allow Myself To Introduce Myself

Grew up in Central Florida since I was about one year old. Have lived briefly in other states but always returned to Florida. I started out with sketching and painting, moved on to faux finishing and murals for such projects as Islands Of Adventure, Portofino Bay Hotel and Splash Mountain at the Magic Kingdom. Some of my faux painting was featured on Mtv Cribs in Rob Zombie's house, California around 2002. The Rob Zombie house was the last time I painted as I had started dabbling with photography around the same time that project began in 1999. Sometime in 2005 I purchased my first digital SLR camera and stopped shooting film all together. It was around that same time I began to intentionally seek out abandoned buildings to photograph and document. Shortly after that, I founded www.FLURBEX.com as a way to meet other photographers/urban explorers like myself, in Florida. Over the 5+ years, I have photographed over 1000 abandonments in Florida, IN, MO, GA, AL, NJ, NY and PA.

I have met some really great people in the urban exploring/photography community around the nation and have a lot of fond memories of our adventures. Without them, I personally feel my art would not be the same. It is through all of us the spirit of adventure, curiosity and the past flows through.

Ocala cave systems on private land. We had to sign waivers for that.

I found myself asking that question several times. A geo-tag and perhaps a minimal description of the location could be fun to peruse. Perhaps even some available history... But I don't mean to be presumptuous. The shots are great, and much work has clearly been done. Thanks for posting.

My crew and I are very much against putting location names and addresses out on the internet. Locations you see here on Metro Jacksonville are an exception. The buildings here are pretty well secured. Most of the places we find around Florida are not like this. They are wide open and anyone can access them. In the words of Alfred, Bruce Wayne's butler, "some men just want to watch the world burn". This is why we try to keep the location info off of the internet. Too many people love to scrap materials, vandalize and just cause general mayhem and destruction. This brings a lot of unwanted attention from law enforcement and the city/county which makes return trips very difficult and sometimes impossible. Beyond that, it obviously just gets the buildings condemned and eventually demolished.

FLURBEX and I have been called elitist because we dont openly discuss the whereabouts of the abandonments we photograph. This couldnt be further from the truth. We are a good group of people I think and are constantly weeding out the bad apples that tend to come and go, as with any internet forum.
