T-U viewers can comment again: but no "blatantly offensive or abusive" comments

Good for the T-U.  They chose to allow online visitors to comment.  The service had been shut down for a while because there were a few users who were being abusive and vulgar with their posts.  The editors decided to be more vigilant of the posts.  If you ask me, I think both were good moves:  allowing posts again and being more vigilant on those few posters who are abusive, inconsiderate and vulgar.

Here is the story...

QuoteJust In commenting returns

Posted: Thursday, June 12th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

We are resuming our tradition of allowing Jacksonville.com users to post comments on breaking news stories with this Just In entry.

We suspended this feature several months ago on a portion of our site because a small number of Jacksonville.com users had become abusive with their comments.

Our newsroom hotly debated whether Just In commenting should resume. In the end, we decided the positives far outweighed the negatives, but that we should take a more active role checking in on public discussions.

We will never edit someone’s post. However, we will remove posts we come across that are blatantly offensive or abusive.

Because of the volume and 24/7 nature of our message boards, there is no way we can check every single post. So, we are asking for your help. If you come across an offensive post please click on the report an offensive message link to drop us an e-mail. We’ll review the post and decide whether it should be removed.

Jacksonville.com will continue to encourage the exchange of opinions, information and ideas. However, comments that are obscene, racist, sexual in nature or otherwise inappropriate are not acceptable and will be removed at the discretion of Jacksonville.com/Times-Union management.

We have one simple request for those that choose to post comments: Be considerate of others.

As always, we welcome your feedback, and thank you for using Jacksonville.com.

The message board on the Jaguars section of their website is out of control. They have whiped it clean a couple of times but the idiotic behavior continues.

The exact reason why I stay away from those comment boards and instead post here.
