QuoteThere is no pretty way to choose and tell someone,   "Hey,  we are cutting your position"

Sure there is, where are the JSO positions that were let go? Are they in the paper with their salaries? They should be public record, right????So where are they?

Rutherford has more class than Brown, so far.
And, that $115 will save Jacksonville from financial ruin. - Mayor John Peyton

"This is a game-changer. This is what I mean when I say taking Jacksonville to the next level."

I'm not sure the laid-off officers would agree

M-train.... you still did not answer the question.  How would you have handled it?

Timken, I fail to see how your private sector experience is relevant to what we have seen at City Hall with our Jacksonville government? Private sector is in business to make a profit, government is in business to balance a budget. More incentive in Private Sector to cut when needed and re-invest money back into the enterprise, and government is to provide the services back to customers (citizens) that it collected in taxes. I am sorry you and the CSRs were cut, but someone at the top made a BUSINESS decision to cut you and the others and thus keep the business profitible. Brown cut people to balance a budget, instead of raising property taxes. We shall see how the cuts to people affect services.

With regard to Brown, how he cut the people is in question here, not that he did or did not need to do so. He needs millions in relief, and found a great deal with the cuts, no question. It is how they cut the people, that is of concern to me. It needed to be done, and there are more that need to be cut, but it could be handled more professionally. Just look at how Rutherford made the officers aware of their layoffs, one at a time, they came in and discussed the layoffs, well done, hats off to Rutherford. Tough cuts for sure, but they were handled better, at least in the Public eye, than those at City Hall.

Actually M-train ... I should have gone into further detail about my line of work and you wouldn't so readily say the owner made a business decision to keep the company profitable.. it was actually a business decision that would eventually put the lights out for the company...intentionally..  Myself and my department did sales and service of Graphic Arts Equipment and Supplies and our revenues  CARRIED our company.   So while I understand the point you are trying to make of the difference in instance between the two , the bottom line is the same.   Jobs were cut.  Jobs were lost.  the difference was /is    it was a deliberate effect in a company takeover , resulting in its demise..    Browns administration was cut monies to operate the Government, and when that happens  ( I know I should not have to spell this out)  this means positions are cut.  I think had Mike Hogan ended up at City Hall , this still may have been the case.   So I fail to understand your point.

Am I missing something here, or are you saying it is more classy to let them go and then post their salaries in the newspaper, and make it public record?  Are you suggesting some kind of cover up or that this was malicious and deliberately targeted toward particular people?

And lastly ,   How would you have handled it , were you Mayor ?
