Politics aside, the most basic and cursory review of Killingsworth's performance reveals we simply can't afford to lose him.

I remember 2003 vividly with the Boy Wonder taking office, using the former head of JEA to help him invest the City's money in Wall Street schemes, only to lose taxpayer money. Yet for some bonehead reason, taxpayers re-elected him again 4 years later.

So you cut some fat from the rolls, he still has a few hundred more to go, people will forget soon enough, look how many forgot he was the chosen one from May? It is important to never forget where you came from, so that you can see how much or how little you have grown. We'll see if these changes propel or sink his first few years. I am open to see how it all plays out, I do find it ironic that more people are not upset about some of the cuts, only the planning director, what, no love for the Jr. Planning Director who was also cut? Ironic, don't you think?

Most here are complaining about only one of the many cuts.  We are not jumping off the ship to say we should have elected Hogan.  If it is an all or nothing world you need you may be disappointed to learn about how this world works.  No matter who was elected or how much we like them we should always scrutinize our leaders.

I say let the people you voted for do their jobs, the paint is still drying in his office and people are throwing him under the bus. Peyton screwed up so many times in his first year, but we had the Super Bowl and rising jobs and increasing funds, so his great vision never came to fruition, because it was clouded with good times. Other side of the coin, Brown is wading through the Great Recession and everywhere he looks its bad, so he really deserves some slack to see how he handles this mess, again, before throwing him under the bus.

No, he didn't vote for Brown. But now that we're all unhappy with Brown's decisions, he comes out of the woodwork to gloat.

While I am unhappy with the decisions made, I still do not regret that I helped vote the man into office.  To me at least it still remains the better of the two choices.

Nope, I did not vote for him, he is a great man, but I am not convinced he is on the right track, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. The only issue I have is that the firings of many of the people, who never made it to the paper, could have and should have been handled better. Alice Newman had been there 12 years, got canned, why? Because she could be replaced by an automated phone system? Was someone else better qualified to answer phones? People canned only because the mayor said, " We cannot afford them any longer". Well, why stop there? I know of entire groups in other city agencies that should be cut. I am hope we see more. Peyton added at least 1000 people during his term, cut that 1000 out, we get back to a manageable level, when Delaney was in charge. Perhaps we can cut them through the next few months, rather than all at once, say before Christmas?

that is still an unknown....some believe there may be a desire to combine planning and public works...if so, it is a laudable (yet challenging) idea.

as for Killingsworth, I think he has the opportunity to revert back to his previous role as Chief of Comprehensive Planning

on another note...I heard that the former Public Works Director, Joey Duncan, has already returned to his previous civil service position at JEA

I am curious , M-train..  and I really am not trying to be sarcastic.... how would you , were you Mayor, handle deciding who is cut?   


This is nothing new ..  Back in 2000,  a company I worked for in Orlando, was sold.  When the new owners came in , so did the job cuts.  My work record, attendance record, performance was great per every one of my annual reviews, which came with pay raises every year.  I generated as much revenue as many of the 7 co-workers in my department.  For whatever reason, My position was the very first one to be cut from my department , along with other CSRs , Sales people , and another entire branch in another location all let go on the same day.  In total that day around 22 people lost their jobs and none of them "dead wood " by any means.     My boss who hired me had to give this news to me, and he was clearly very upset to have to. Within 2 years the entire group was let go, and he was No longer a Manager and instead of losing a position entirely was given the option of going into Sales.   

My point is , these things happen, and they are going to continue to.  I do not like hearing that a Man who obviously contributed greatly and was obviously well-liked by the community and probably by the admin  was axed , as well as another person ,  Ms Newman after 12 years of service.  I know the feeling.  It happened to me.   The bottom line is , nobody is irreplaceable in the work force nowadays.    I do not like that Brown  ( I assume this was his choice)  let these two people go, however, it very well may well have been the same result, were the other man put in office.   Hard choices have to be made sometimes and no matter who is in office , you will never make everyone happy.    I believe this is a miniscule , at best example of what is to follow, and I hate that it is happening, but  Brown is not to blame for everything that is happening, no more than Hogan would be.   I feel for everyone that has lost their position  .

Timken, I fail to see how your private sector experience is relevant to what we have seen at City Hall with our Jacksonville government? Private sector is in business to make a profit, government is in business to balance a budget. More incentive in Private Sector to cut when needed and re-invest money back into the enterprise, and government is to provide the services back to customers (citizens) that it collected in taxes. I am sorry you and the CSRs were cut, but someone at the top made a BUSINESS decision to cut you and the others and thus keep the business profitible. Brown cut people to balance a budget, instead of raising property taxes. We shall see how the cuts to people affect services.

With regard to Brown, how he cut the people is in question here, not that he did or did not need to do so. He needs millions in relief, and found a great deal with the cuts, no question. It is how they cut the people, that is of concern to me. It needed to be done, and there are more that need to be cut, but it could be handled more professionally. Just look at how Rutherford made the officers aware of their layoffs, one at a time, they came in and discussed the layoffs, well done, hats off to Rutherford. Tough cuts for sure, but they were handled better, at least in the Public eye, than those at City Hall.
