Interesting....

QuoteA Jacksonville City Council panel voted today to eliminate Education Commissioner Donald Horner's office from the city's 2012 budget.

Members of the council Finance Committee praised Mayor Alvin Brown's motivation in creating the office, but said it should be created separate from the budget process, if at all.

Brown's staff said the decision won't stop the effort.

"The mayor intends to have an education commissioner," Brown chief of staff Chris Hand told the panel, saying the decision of how to do that may have to be reexamined.

Horner, loaned to the city on a $1-a-year basis by Jacksonville University, said the committee's vote doesn't immediately change his work.

"I am an army of one," and will stay on the job, he said.

The 2012 budget takes effect Oct. 1. The full council will vote on it next month.
