Stubborn unemployment and dipping housing prices placed Jacksonville in the bottom 20 in economic performance in the first quarter when ranking the nation's 100 largest cities, according to a report released Wednesday.

My Take - We will come back, we have a new vision, and I hope we can execute.

This is no suprise...hopefully our new leadership can help turn around the leadership of the past...it's going to be hard...remember our new leader won by a very very tight margin...he's young and experienced so hopefully he won't run up against local road blocks..he can't do any worse than damage the past leaders have done...help us all. Personally i think it more about the city council and thier ability to think forward and stop leaning on antiquated ideas and rules and regulations....we can have the best mayor around but with a stuborn do nothing council...we are all fucked.

Boy! Garden Guy, did you not have a cup of coffee this morning? Some of your posts this morning were hasty and deleted by the moderators. Are you okay man?

For the topic, this is a great opportunity for Jacksonville to hit rock bottom in order to turn things around. Once the ship can start turning, we can prepare to launch lot of things on the ship as she takes her wide and slow turn. After the turn, we should be on a flank speed to our own economic growth along with the downtown and transit improvements.

Here's the MetroMoniter:

Here are the metro area profiles:
http://www.brookings.edu/metro/MetroMonitor/profiles.aspx

Unfortunately this isn't (just) a Jacksonville issue, it's a state issue. The institute includes eight Florida metro areas on the list of 100; of these 5 (including Jax) are among the weakest 20 in overall performance, and the other three are in the bottom 40. Some fair better on individual indicators, but few fare well on more than a few indicators.

I wish Brown the best, but he isn't mayor of the economy.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Exactly!!!
Reminds of NYC in late 70s when the city should have gone bankrupt. Wealth moved out, artists moved in. The cities best times were then.

I agree. I think we are in a good position to turn things around. IMO Brown is an everything mayor. The economy, DT revitalization, fiscal responsibility, etc. I'm sure he will do fine. No leadership is perfect, but I'm sure he will get us in a great position.

Think about this, Peyton's was a jobs mayor true enough, however he was fiscally irresponsible. VERY irresponsible. He spent money the city did not have to spend on things we could have don't without.

I think once the Brown Administration gets our accounting practices in order, there is no where to go but up.

After reading this, I found a very interesting reading about how New York almost went bankrupt. it was even funnier was that they asked the governement for a financial bailout and president ford told them no. The headlines the next day stated "Ford to New york: Drop Dead" LMAO Anyways, It stated that artist began to occupy vacant lofts and other buildings, then the galleries, restaurants and bars followed. We are not New York, however that is the EXACT trend that we are experiencing in our downtown. I'm not by any means saying that Artist's are going to save the city, but It is a interesting comparison.

That situation was so severe that, in the east village particularly, landlords abandoned the buildings and the artists moved in vacated buildings hence the term "squatters". Is that too close for home or what!
