Never even seen/heard of this place....Jax has a great park system, but such a small percentage of the population can actually find these places...unless, of course, they live right by them.

Maybe the small population that can't find these places needs to log onto COJ.net.

I agree...if I wanted to find a new or different park, I too would use coj.net...but common...how many people really take advantage of tools like that  ::)

Note too the wetland restoration area at the far North Westerly corner created a couple of years ago and other recent plantings along the easterly border.

The park is large enough to accommodate multiple uses along with a nice chunk of wide open space.

The neighborhood was faced with a proposed soccer field-an inappropriate intrusion successfully held in check.

Great Frisbee field!

Good god! I never realized how many parks we have in Jacksonville until I saw Google Map.

I believe we have the largest urban park system in the US...

Beautiful. All of the parks in that area have a long history of being beautiful places...and I mean LONG. Hell's bells I was at Willow Branch, Boone and the various Ortega Parks as a tot in the early 50's.

Historically though for the Junior High School and above level, it's been the secret hideouts at the end of dirt roads along our rivers that have seen most of the action. A sunken warship in the Ortega, a high sandy bluff, rope swings, and it is said about 22.4% of the population of Jacksonville was conceived on that old bluff. God knows I did all that I could to do my part! Bluff Landing is lost forever, along with it's nearby moonshine still, under some damn neighborhood today. Too many of our treasures have gone this route, for example why wasn't that developer required to respect a nearly 200 year old playground... YEAH 200 years, because that old warship, is the remains of the burned part of the CSS ST MARYS.  (The hull was raised post war, but the cargo and upper works remain in the drink). Sort of makes my mind wander Fishing Creek? Confederate Point? The Lower Ortega? The big covered barn on the dock that had the faded words "Dancing Nightly," the hangout of Al Capone. Unreal this place we call Jacksonville.

(The CSS St. Marys was ready to run the blockade and got into a chase with the USS gunboat steamer USS Uncas).

What I love most about Fishweir Park is Sunday afternoons.  Head over with your pooch and be prepared for a gonzo, guerilla leash-free play-fest.  Yes, it's against the law.  No, the neighbors don't care.  Yes, the dogs love it.

Fishweir is a great neighborhood park, tucked away a couple of blocks north of Herschel Street.

My son's soccer team practiced there for years.  Funny - a post yesterday on a different thread complaining about fire ants in Klutho Park made me think about Fishweir and the time twelve 7 year old soccer players all started dancing wildly during a practice following a heavy rain - at least parents thought they were dancing until we realized they were screaming in pain and covered with fire ants trying to escape from the rising water.

Klutho's got NOTHING on Fishweir when it comes to the fire ant population!

I just signed a contract on a house 3 blocks from Fishweir. It's good to be back

In every group there are the "doers" and the "whiners".
