I saw on the Times-Union website that former Jacksonville mayor Ed Austin has passed away.

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

I saw him a few days ago in Avondale.  He was highly interested and engaged in this election season.  Those of us who've known him for a long while know that he's looked frail of late.  To be expected given his age.  I wouldn't have believed it would my last time to see him, though.

Often is the case.. I wonder (not that it really matters now) what happened?

A sad day indeed.  I frequently saw him shopping at the 5 points publix and eating at the old King St. Pizza Palace.  He was always so friendly and approachable.  One of the great lions of Jacksonville, even if I did not always agree with his policies.

The last time that I saw him was a few weeks ago at the Blue Fish in Avondale.  He was very friendly and I enjoyed talking to him.

QuoteTo be expected given his age.

84 is only a few years older than the average life expectancy. Our area has many folks in their 80s, 90s, and century mark. Combination of factors including how you live your life, exposure to the sun, and hereditary have to come into play. Jake Goldbold is in his 80s and he looks and acts with the same vibrancy he had back in the 90s. Mayor Austin lived a great life and the obit in the TU on Saturday was a fantastic tribute to a well revered citizen!

And, that $115 will save Jacksonville from financial ruin. - Mayor John Peyton

"This is a game-changer. This is what I mean when I say taking Jacksonville to the next level."

He was a great guy and a real asset to this city. His presence will be missed.
