As I was reminded by Abel Harding's Florida Morning blog on jacksonville.com, today is the birthday of Napoleon Bonaparte Broward for whom the Dames Point Bridge is officially named.

My late uncle always pointed out that the Dames Point was actually the Napoleon Bonaparte Broward bridge......

Yep, we've always taken liberities with naming the local bridges. Napolen Bonaparte Broward is called the Dames Point, so why not call the Matthews bridge the "Arlington Bridge" ?

Ok ok i'll never get mass support for that one.

The only one-offs are the Main St. Bridge (John T Alsop) & The Dames Point. I suppose the original names just weren't catchy enough.

Nine syllables is just too much to repeat all the time.  Three is OK.

On the other hand we don't call it the St. Elmo W. Acosta Bridge either.

But "Bonaparte Bridge"?  Sounds too close to "Blown Apart Bridge"!

LOL!  Good one, Charles.  Remind me never to get into a punning match with you.

We could call them the Cable-stayed bridge , the Red Bridge , the Green Bridge, the Blue Bridge and the two grey concrete monsters  .

I can see see the eagle flyin'
cross the deepest sea
traffic going towards I-95
St. Elmo Acosta's Fire
burnin' in me.....

If they're called by location...
Dames Point bridge
Arlington bridge
Commodore Point bridge
Main Street
the 'Riverside' bridge
The I-95 bridge
The I-295 bridge

Many of his descendants still live in Broward Point on the Trout River right off Main St.

True .

How are you , CD???? :)
I'm getting level-headed...  Got the big volunteer recognition going on next week, so I've threatened to shove a couple of coworkers off a bridge! Only, which one?  :D :P

Nah, one of them I'll let live for another month at least - she changed her mind to vote for Alvin!
