Monroe should definitely not be re-installed as it were. Way too close to Adams for that. If city planners wanted to keep Monroe then they shold have used a more vertical design for the courthouse rather than the expansive Taj Mahal-like structure they're building now.

What does need to happen is to put in transit pull-offs on both Broad and Adams adjecent to the courthouse. The rest should be all park space.

Definitely agree with the transit pull off suggestion.  Along Broad, it would be nice to see the proposed BRT station a block north, moved to anchor the west end of the plaza.  Adding a mix of uses to the public space is a major ingredient to making spaces like this vibrant and making transit use more attractive.

Uh Ted? Yeah well I can give you one more reason why we shouldn't have another road in front of the Courthouse... Hell, I don't even like the proximity of Duval to the back door of the place, I think I still have dust in my hair from OKC...

I think it will be funny when they stupidly agree to rebuild the street and then a pedestrian gets hit and then they have to spend the money to close the street/ make it a park.  We will see how our unsympathetic taxpayers feel then.

The city doesn't care if a pedestrian gets hit! Hell, they'll discourage pedestrian use before they admit to making a mistake. And don't think for a microsecond that they'd ever shut down a street.

Well Jacksonville, we did reelect many of the idiots that we needed out of power. Four more years of stagnation. Dig in metrojacksonville, dig in. We'll just have to wait out these next four years.

Maybe just maybe we'll have a surplus in revenue when Hogan's time as mayor is up, with all of the spending cuts he wants to make.

Just sent an e-mail to Mr.Corrigan my district counci lman who i loathe.

The whole decision will turn on security concerns for the judges and prosecutors at the "Parthenon". Bombs in cars or assault rifles on pedestrians - whichever scares them the most.

I think Monroe St can be rebuilt but it should be rebuilt in a way that it doesn't look like a street but a plaza road with bricks everywhere, pedestrian right of way, and stoplights designed to discourage through traffic in front of the courthouse.  If you must drive in front of the courthouse like to drop someone off, you can, but it's not a road that your suppose to drive straight through unless you like driving through a single lane rough brick road that makes your car bounce.

The idea of laying asphalt across with lines that make it run like a super highway, I think that's a bad idea.

Our courhouse is not the Taj.  That designation belongs to the $49 Million courthouse in Tallahassee, FL.

How much would you be willing to ask taxpayers to fund the construction of a new two block long drop off lane?  Would it be more logical to add a little drop off area along Adams or Pearl Streets?

If the city was so concerned about about the continuation of Monroe, perhaps they should have went with a design that was within and maintained the original grid. Instead of the "sprawling" monstrosity they did build that looks as if it should have the old clock tower so Doc Brown could do weather experiments.

Nice!^

In fact, we should consider elevating every downtown street. We could call it the SkywayII.

Imagine the Chamber of Commerce marketing possibilities:

I still like my overpass idea...

Jacksonville is really good at building flyovers.  Perhaps we can build one over all of downtown.  That way folks can just forget it exists.  ;)

Even though i do not agree with ted on this, Never turn a deaf ear to Ted Pappas.

I do think he is wrong on this one though Matt.  It may have more to do with the building he owns on Monroe than what is best for downtown.  I'd like us to get to a point in Jacksonville where we support the best ideas and not the ideas the well-known and connected are promoting if not the best for Jax.
