Elements of Urbanism: Hollywood

Metro Jacksonville visits the "Diamond" of Florida's Gold Coast, which has found a way to create a vibrant downtown of its own despite living in the shadows of its larger neighbors: Hollywood, FL.

Oh to think how many people have died or gone missing in Hollywood, LoL.  Next time include a tour of "This is where ____ OD'd.  This is where ____ was kidnapped."  IMDB has a whole category "People who died in Hollywood, Fl: USA"

Bothering locals and trolling boards since 2005

I like visiting Hollywood, but usually on my way to someplace else. It's a neat little place. Walkable with cool shops. Their director of the Downtown Community Redevelopment Area has it right: "Bringing in and keeping retailers or restaurants that already have a following is key.  There's not enough local demand to support the amount of retail space that we have.  In order for us to be unique and attract people from outside the Hollywood area, we need to continue to get the one-of-a-kind or two-of-a-kind mom and pop shops that we have."

Plus: look at the signage!

Simms, clicking that link reveals "No results." I was unfamiliar with Hollywood, Florida's reputation as a place people go to die or disappear...

I was there last year for the first time in years and was very impressed with how nice Hollywood was. I know it's required to hate South Florida if you live in North Florida, but I love it down there. Yeah, they have problems, but at least they have made progress and have moved into the current century. Oh, and there's stuff to do and see.

I wonder why some people get so sensitive about any kind of mild critcism concerning any city in S. Florida; Time and time again on MJ. And oh yeah.... Most of South FL hates N Florida's guts with a passion! but no no no, N FL can't say anything critical about S FL. Although we can definitely improve here in Jax, last time I checked Jax was in the current century, and we also have stuff to do and see.

I-10 East you never let it go do you? North Florida sucks compared to South Florida. Sorry. We are SE Georgia. We are boring and conservative. We have been left behind. I AM FROM HERE AND I LOVE TO CRITICIZE OUR CITY. There are some great things about NE Florida, but it ain't the city. And I hold NE responsible for the hack we have for governor. He just may put the final nail in the coffin for us. And our great Representatives from NE Florida, Thrasher and Wise, are the geniuses who proposed and backed the new Education Bill that just passed with flying colors and no doubt Scott is foaming at the mouth at his win. If I were a teacher I would not teach in Florida. I would go to a better state. Supposedly there is no money in the budget for education, yet they passed a bill that will pay incentives to teachers who improve test scores. Hmmm!! Where will that money come from? It should put an end to failing schools because who will want to teach at them. All new teachers will be put on a one year contract and a dumba%* Republican said they should be happy because they have a guaranteed job. That is garbage. It's just another way to cheat working people out of benefits and any kind of security. These people on care about power and greed. They will sell YOUR soul to make more money and gain more power. And since we are in the hotbed of right wing tea party thinking, this is more reason to criticize NE Florida and our creative thinkers. So I10, if you don't like my opinion don't read it.....

Hahaha!!! The negative tirade about politics in Jax! I guess that you didn't hear about Miami having to recall it's Mayor. Miami is SO damn overrated. What's wrong with liking Hollywood without taking obligatory shots at Jax; You can continue to take shots at Jax, and I will continue to defend my city. If you don't like that don't read it....

avonjax

You may be so hickified that you think MIami is overrated but why is it an international destination?
Yeah I thought so....
and you can NEVER accuse Jacksonville of being overrated.

Why don't you move down there to Miami then since it's so 'hickified', and it sucks so bad up here in Northern FL? I mean you do hate it here in Jax so much, so it seems. I love my life here in Jax, and MIA surely as hell isn't gonna fulfill some empty void that I'm supposedly missing here in Jax. Since when does being an international destination exclude a city from being overrated? MIA supposed is all that and a bag of chips, but MANY will agrue that ORL has more versatility in things to do.

Interesting to see what they have done with Hollywood Boulevard - I grew up just to the north of Hollywood and remember how unfriendly it was to pedestrians.  Good job to them in turning it around.

Nice area I have friends that I visit there often. Clean, neat and well kept area and not to far from Miami or Ft.Lauderdale.
