High-Speed Chase Ends In Fatal Crash

POSTED: Monday, January 12, 2009
UPDATED: 6:00 am EST January 13, 2009

Police shut down a portion of Deerwood Park Boulevard after a high-speed chase ended with a fatal crash.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A high-speed chase through busy Southside roads during rush hour on Monday ended in a fatal crash.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, at about 4 p.m. officers responded to a carjacking and armed robbery at a convenience store in the 800 block of Beach Boulevard.

"The suspect actually took a victim's vehicle by force, pointed what the victim to believed was a weapon at her and took her vehicle. He left her standing at the scene to call police," said JSO Chief Rick Graham.

Shortly after getting a description of the stolen vehicle, police spotted the SUV and began to pursue the suspect on Baymeadows Road. The chase led officers to Southside Boulevard, and then east onto Deerwood Park Boulevard.

"There were blue lights and sirens with several JSO units trying to stop the armed robbery suspect. Stop sticks were deployed in an effort to stop the fleeing suspect vehicle. The suspect managed to avoid the stop sticks and continued to drive in an erratic manner and high rate of speed on Deerwood Park," Graham said.

In the 10000 block of Deerwood Park Boulevard, the suspect crashed the stolen SUV head-on into another vehicle.

The occupant of the vehicle hit head-on was killed in the collision, Graham said. The suspect was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with minor injuries, and he was later taken to sheriff's office.

Neither the victim's name nor the suspect's name has been released.

Police temporarily closed lanes of Deerwood Park.

No officers were injured in the chase.

wow...breaking news!

Did the person this high speed chase killed come back from the dead?

Maybe you should tell the news to update their article with news of this reincarnation...

I agree, these car jackers and robbers should just be shot on site, instead of  taking a chance they might kill an innocent bystander.

Just like in every other of the ten or so posts on this the CRIMINAL is causing a death, accident, or injury to themselves or innocent bystanders. The ONLY other option is just to let them freely break the law.

Umm yeah...

Someone had a couple cocktails, huh?

What crime did the innocent driver who this chase plowed into and died commit? Was it worth it?

Chris, you do know that this story happened way back in January 09'? Sure that incident was unfortunate and all, but it's a lil' awkward to make a thread so late.

Someone was arguing with me in another thread that these chases aren't dangerous enough to warrant not conducting them. I posted this, and other stories, to show these often kill innocent people who had nothing to do with the chase.

Just about all police departments have policies regarding pursuits...and any time an officer engages in one, it has to be authorized by a supervisor and there are times when they are told to break off.

Now with bringing up old stories, there was a story/incident, I believe happened last year (perhaps the year before) where an officer accelerated at a high rate of speed to catch up with someone who had windows tinted darker than the law permits...as a result, the officer struck a pick up truck that turned into his path, killing the elderly driver. From what I recall, the officer was found guilty/dsiciplined, and the city shelled out money as a result of that, to the mans family. So not all incidents are swept under the carpet.

There was also the one where a fire department officer struck another vehicle, and that officer was also found guilty...and disciplined.

Not yet.... but I think the argument is a little silly so thought I would throw my silliness around a bit too :-)

Are there accidents in high speed chases that are unjustified? Yep
Are there a lot of idiots out there that are not paying attention to the road, talking on their phone, spacing out, or thinking they can "beat" the police or fire truck? Yep.

We live in a society with laws (police enforce), and safety nets( firemen/ambulances) and at times emergencies are going to arise, and these people are going to need to speed through traffic, taking the legal right of way with lights and/or siren to get somewhere/someone quickly. If you are intelligent enough to be on the road, you should be intelligent enough to be cognizant about your surroundings and stay out of the way of emergency vehicles. Are accidents going to happen? Of course, but they are unintentional and unavoidable at times (hence the name accident).

I personally am more concerned about the number of idiots with a $500 for a used car, $20 for a license, and another $100 for a month of insurance. Especially when they still have $40 left over for a damn "go phone" which they are driving around talking on.That is a WAY bigger issue than the few high speed chases that occur in Jacksonville.

Yeah we do have a lot of idiot drivers around here. No argument there whatsoever.

We also have a whooooooooole lot of broke and uninsured drivers running around, I personally had my car totaled by one who was driving 60 down a side street in riverside at 3am and plowed into my parked car. Thankfully I had comp/collision or I would've been screwed. Her name was Ebony Muff, I swear to god. I was in palm beach when it happened, and when I got back I called the officer who wrote the report and asked "did we get her non-stripper name?" and he said he couldn't believe it himself but that was really her name. Lol
