for whatever it is worth, in my old testament prophets class back in college (circa 1997) i remember the professor passing out a cartoon that profiled 4 centuries - that were like 5 centuries apart each (like, 350 AD, 850 AD, 1350 AD, 1850 AD, 1980 AD, etc...) and in each there was some guy who was dressed to the times of that era and he was screaming, "it's the end, the end is near!!!".   

the point was that many people in all times have looked around and seen reasons for the "end time is now".  how exciting would it be to scream "The end is coming in 800 years!!!"  no one would care.
