After hearing the news about Cecil Field Becoming a spaceport,..Ive been googling "Outer Space Theme/ Amusement Park....not much comes up. Kennedy in Orlando & some plans they have in Hong Kong. Could a ride & theme based amusement park work at Cecil?? Seems like it would be a while before the space tour industry kicks in. Kennedy is more like a MOSH for space travel, but no rides, no characters, no real adventure like Six Flags or Busch Gardens....just thinking out the box here.

Sorry friends, but Orlando has a lock on amusement parks well into the next century. Even a locally based park like WILD ADVENTURES in Valdosta, must be located near a major N-S interstate to even tread water...

Anyone expecting to see any major "something" at the new "spaceport" should immediately invest in WESTINGHOUSE TENNECO'S OFF-SHORE-POWER-SYSTEMS. Sadly historically speaking this is exactly the sort of off the wall crap investment in time-money and energy that has landed this city "In The Pit's".
This thing would get more visitors if they opened a welcome station for ET'S out there.

Ock, commercial space travel isn't about the tourists.  They are only the pioneers.  Its all about the satellites/experiments and astronaut transport to and from the ISS, including its spin-off industries that would congregate around it.

Cooly, KSC does have a "ride" or two, including a simulated virtual reality launch (way cool!).  If you haven't been go VERY VERY soon as it may not be around for much longer.

I'm not sure a theme park would fly in Jax.  I'm much more optimistic that my idea to build a 1,000 foot mountain on the Southside and create the first subtropical ski resort would be the thing to put us on the big league maps.

In the early to mid 60s, there actually were plans announced for a space-themed amusement park in Huntsville, called Space City USA, I believe.  My friend Tim Hollis, who writes extensively about lost Americana and roadside attractions, had some material on this in his book "Dixie Before Disney."  However, he's had a hard time turning up more concrete information on it beyond the general plans and the names of the park's themed areas.  All traces of the park seem to have vanished into, well, outer space.
The tourist would realize at once that he had struck the Land of Flowers - the City Beautiful!

Never heard of Space City USA but looked for info on Google and found a link for this site. There is a poster from the proposed park and some other interesting photos from that era.

Virgin Galactic is investing pretty heavily into the New Mexico Spaceport:

They are building a pretty cool hanger and visitors center that will have some attractions. And this is oin the middle of no where.

Thanks for posting!

Mr. Hollis is one of the contributors to Birmingham Rewound and had mentioned to me that Huntsville Rewound was doing some investigation.

Still don't see this as the golden (read that: It's another OPS) thread of salvation for our city. While I realize space, exploration-tourism and most importantly manufacturing is on the threshold, I think we are still a long way down the road from anything like a profitable return industry. That said, it makes sense that the space ports are going to be full of highly speculative, trial and error companies. Even with excellent start-up financing that still spells wobbly legs for a life-time or more.

I don't get the NEW MEXICO deal, because they've missed ROSWELL! Damn!

I don't think it will be Jacksonville's salvation either, just that it very well could be another profitable industry further expanding our local diversity.

Maybe a little too over the top? An Outerspace Coney Island at Cecil Field....Keep dreaming lol.

You got it Jason, my point exactly. I promise to get just as excited over a new Coal Terminal, or Coffee Shop and THIS project will probably fall somewhere on the low end of in between.
