Not really "dining", but figured this section has to do with food.

Does anyone know of any goof local meat markets around town?  I live in St Nick and am looking for somewhere to get some quality meat to fill my smoker with tomorrow.  Looking for boston butts, country ribs, baby back, whatever.

Thanks

Tillman's in Mandarin. It's on Old St Augustine Rd about a mile after you get off of San Jose.  Or Pine Grove meat market in Avondale.

Pinegrove is great... but if you're smoking meat I wouldnt go that route.  Winn Dixie meat department is your best bet.  They have the best deals on shoulder, butts, etc.  They normally always have rib specials this time of the year.  I got a great deal on baby backs two weeks ago that I took camping with me.  Cheapness is the beauty of smoking meat anyway, lol.

From time to time, Sams will have a good buy on tenderloin and I'll cut steaks off that.

But stuff for smoking, WD all day long.

Sorry - It's Fleming Island "Choice" Meats @ 4324 Raggedy Point Road at the corner of US17 & Raggedy Point (Behind the Kangaroo/Burger King)

Tillman's sells "no roll" which is a grade below 'choice." It does have a good flavor; I wonder if they tenderize it.
Costco has Prime Ribeyes and N Y Strips.
They are the Best.

Check out Sam's Club. If you're not a member and do a lot of smoking it's worth the membership. They have good prices on butts (two in a pack) baby backs, short and full ribs (three slabs to a pack.) Check out the spice section if you do a dry rub- very good prices. You can get the disposable aluminum pans for the chuckies there too.

Also our mullet run will happen soon. Tough to beat smoked mullet!!

When I lived in Ortega, I used to go to the Carroll's off of Blanding near Wilson. I was never disappointed.

Geeze, Im having all the shrimp I can handle right now!!!  This has been the best shrimp run that I can remember, lol.

I agree though, smoked St Johns mullet makes the fall more tolerable.

Last night I watched the doc "Food Inc." which has motivated me to make change in my food purchases. I've been going to the Beaver St. Farmer's Market for a couple years now (thanks Metro-Jax) and I would like to find a similar market with a local meat selection.

Anyone know of any local meat farmers offering all natural natural meat from a stress free environment?

Has anyone tried meat from Ashlin Farms?

QuoteAt Ashlin Farms, our goal is to provide a high-quality, natural product using natural means to sustain the land and cattle.  Ashlin Farms produces 100% natural beef.
Our animals are cared for in a stress-free environment where they graze on fresh grass fields. Our beef is raised without the administration of antibiotics or growth hormones. Our grass-fed cattle are rotated to new paddocks of grass daily. They have no grain supplement in their diet and only eat grass and hay.

And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

Shwaz, there is a thread dedicated to local farms getting their meats. These farms have their own website where you can order meats and proteins you want, and they would be happy to deliver to their vendors at the local market places like one at Neptune Beach. They also bring their own selection for you to check it out too.

Here is the link to that farm: http://www.cognitofarm.com/

Thanks Josh... this is exactly what I was looking for. It's a shame they don't deliver to RAM or the Beaver St. market or anywhere in Jacksonville. I might try the delivery option. The prices are considerably higher but my goal is to cut down on overall meat intake as well as move away from purchasing from the multi-national food conglomerates.

Thanks again  for the heads-up.
