You're right. I forgot about Benito's. I have eaten there a few times and the food is good and the people were very friendly.

QuoteI wonder if Speckled Hen is opening in the old Beef O'Brady's.
Yes - that's exactly where it's at.

Also, I did notice that there's a "Speckled Hen" Pub & Alehouse in Reading, PA.  Not sure if there's any connection at all there, however.

As for the location, I'm mixed.  It's relieving to still have new places come into the Avenues area (Lat. 360, Forever 21, etc.) instead of immediately assuming SJTC.  That said, Avenues Walk has a LONG way to go.

I dont think the Speckled Hen is a chain, there's no references to the restaurant online, however the name might be familiar as there's a delicious English beer called Old Speckled Hen.
I love OSH...they have it on tap at Kickbacks...pretty sure that's why I moved to within a block of that place...

Riverside needs more sushi places like eskimos need more ice.

FWIW, I also agree that all the ones around there are bland and nothing special. I drive to Roosevelt Mall to get Fuji sushi when I'm in the mood for it, they're good. Or I go to Gainesville for some Dragonfly, they're really good. But aside from those places, none of the sushi locally is really any good. Stephen had a sushi place he liked, but it's closed now. Everytime someone says "XYZ place is the best" I go and wind up being disappointed.

I'd put Sushi around here at about a 3 or 4 on a 1-10 scale. Some of the worst sushi places in other cities are better than our best places here. Not sure how/why this developed, but it just is what it is. It's certainly no cheaper around here, so it's not like you're even getting a discount for the missing quality.

We aren't exactly in a culinary mecca. For whatever reason, a large percentage of diners in this town will accept absolute absolute crap on their plate.

The Speckled Hen is exactly the kind of place you want downtown in the Sports District. With a name like that and British pub/European fare palate, that would become an instant Jax landmark. Unfortunately, downtown population numbers can't support it yet.

That's what I was thinking.  Even if they put this place at the Landing it would do well.  It sounds like a truly Jax style restaurant, I just wish it was closer to the core.

The ONLY thing I MAY like about Yoshi Sushi is that they claim to DELIVER. Delivery sushi sounds FANTASTIC.

As for people interested in AW Shucks, it is a Charleston based, family-owned company. I actually lived with some family of the owners in peninsular Charleston for four years...It's just OKAY. Another greasy seafood place. Would actually be kind of surprised if it lasted in the area it's opening in.

I don't think this is _the_ A.W. Shucks - it's Aw Shucks. Looks like someone semi-poached their name. If you Google them you'll find their Facebook page with a rather clunkily designed logo and photos of the place.

Last night, me and Step and Brett (I can't remember their names on here, steph says girl, and her husband Brett) went to Speckled Hen for a beer and a bite. It was good! They have cool beers, friendly and quick service, and the food was delicious! The manager told us they do a happy hour from 4-7 and the beers (even bottled) are a dollar off (16oz PBR for a buck!) and house wines are reduced price as well. Right now no liquor but they're working on it. It seems like it's going to a great new hangout!

It's nice to have a local place in Mandarin with some charm!  They have a great selection of micro-brewed and import beers on tap and in bottles.  Interesting food choices and a warm atmosphere. I'll be back!  Plus, I love the name Speckled Hen.  :D

Hmm, we were there last night. On Philips Highway practically next door to the movie theater. Perhaps you're thinking of something else, or there are places with similar names?

Nope.  It's definately on Philips - near the theater in the old Beef O'Brady's spot.
