13 Gypsies

Recently showered with national cable audience attention, 13 Gypsies is one of those little places that has found itself part of the growing foodie community in Jacksonville.  Along with the likeminded artisans and their enthusiastic patrons at Orsay, Chew, and Taverna, they are at the center of a tight social group of discriminating and experimentally titillated movement in dining.

Join Cari Sanchez Potter, the indefatigable gastronomist and riverside resident for her excursion to the tiny but mighty cafe of 13 Gypsies.

I highly reccommend the Double Cow!

I have their number handy for speed dial in case the mood strikes me, however so far I have only been once. But, I loved everything, including the tiny size of the place. I remember starting w/ a cheese plate w/ wine of course and I know we also had the "angry bull" but no polenta or dessert. I am overdue for another visit!

I ate there for lunch once.  My recollection was the food was good but the portions were way too small for the prices.  Leaving with a full stomach wasn't in the cards.
Hey!  Whatever happened to just plain ol' COMMON SENSE!!

Let me say this first: I love the crew at 13 gypsies, I love their ideas, I loved Sangria House. I do not love tapas. I honestly haven't had much fun with tapas anywhere stateside. Their food is technically brilliant but I think 80% of what makes tapas entertaining and fun is the fact that as soon as you have a few dishes at one place, you get up and go to another bar and repeat several times until you can no longer walk straight. What I'd love for them to do is focus more on entrees. I guess their menu now works well for where they are but just imagine the insane food they churn out if they had more space and more traditional menu style.

@ thekillingwax:

The food there is incredible, but I think you're missing the point.  If it were larger, Chef Howard wouldn't be able to ensure that 'all' of the food met his approval.  And if they went to a 'more traditional' menu, which I assume to interpret as 'apps, sandwiches, entrees...' then they wouldn't be a tapas eatery at all, would they?

Rather than hoping that a diamond in the rough changes to accomodate our personal wants, Let's hope that more '13 Gypsies' type restaurants keep opeing up in our little section of Jax, and then maybe you will be able to satisfy your need for a traditional menu, make your way from place to place and enjoy the food.
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

@non-redneck: I concur.

My only (minor) gripe with 13G is that their sole side option is just the plain old greens. It gets old eating the same greens and vinaigrette with everything 154,653 times because it's the only option. Would be nice if there were another side item available.

Other than that, I wouldn't change a single thing about the place, I think their food is great.

I don't get it...yeah the food is ok..but just ok..i've been there about 5 times and each time there was some issue with the seating...on time they wanted 3 of us to sit at a 2 top in the corner..and the place was empty..the food was nothing fabulous..just ok...i guess there's alot of people that can't cook around because these dishes are'nt all that...sorry but i'm not impressed.

Since you have insulted 3 restaurants this morning, Garden Guy, what restaurant in town do you like??  Actually, give me your top 5.

Personally, I think 13 Gypsies is the pinnacle of good dining. Honestly one of the best restaurants Jacksonville has to offer. Chef owned bistros are a rare thing in this country, even in big cities...

You could probably substitute "like" with "own/manage" and be more accurate.
